MSU Interview
Dear Angusmclellan,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.
If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.
Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 04:19, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Happy Adminship Anniversary
Wishing Angusmclellan a very happy adminship anniversary on behalf of the Misplaced Pages Birthday Committee! Armbrust, B.Ed. about my edits? 22:48, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Horror story
I am rather horrified to discover that List of Scottish monarchs still begins with Kenneth MacAlpin. This is the kind of thicko pseudo-history that makes Misplaced Pages look incompetent as an academic resource. Do you have any suggestions? As far as I can see, most of the experts in medieval history have (unsurprisingly) abandonned Misplaced Pages, so it is very hard to know who on earth to turn to. --Mais oui! (talk) 04:47, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- My qualifications for offering assistance are hardly impressive, but here is a suggestion. The distinction between "Scotland" and precursor entities would seem to be a process rather than a single event, so, wherever the list starts the lead just needs to point readers to the List of kings of Dál Riata and List of kings of the Picts with a brief comment and a nod to Woolf's From Pictland to Alba, 789–1070 p. 320ff or similar. Ben MacDui 13:07, 12 May 2012 (UTC) PS Happy birthday Angus.
- Not sure if I can give much more help than this, but it is certainly an issue. I seem to remember somewhere a form of words that indicated that names (and dates) were traditional, which might be a solution, but I cannot remember where. Otherwise breaking the list up, as suggested above, may be the best solution.--SabreBD (talk) 13:56, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
Most lists of British monarchs that I've come across list English, and even Anglo-Saxon monarchs, but tend to neglect Scottish and Welsh ones...--MacRusgail (talk) 14:36, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
I think Ben MacDui and Sabrebd have it right. It's not like Denmark and its semi-legendary and legendary and more a case of it depends what you mean by Scotland. Angus McLellan (Talk) 14:32, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Deletion review on Category:Fooian prelates
In regards to Misplaced Pages:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 May 27#Prelates and the discussion on these categories: I was recently trying to find men who are Honorary Prelates but not bishops, and I was having a hard time because there was no category. Then I noticed that Category:Italian prelates is populated, extremely sparsely. I was about to start adding cardinals to the category but then I noticed the old deletion discussion. I wonder if it can be revisited, especially in light of discussion of reorganization at Misplaced Pages:Categories for discussion/Log/2012 June 7#Category:Roman Catholic Church organizations. I hope that Misplaced Pages's categories can be more descriptive of Church structure, rather than just lower-common-denominator. Elizium23 (talk) 13:38, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Just a message to let you know that I've scheduled Aldfrith of Northumbria as the TFA on 27th January 2013. Hope this is OK. Orphaned non-free media (File:Heatwave (band photo, 1976).jpg)
Thanks for uploading File:Heatwave (band photo, 1976).jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Misplaced Pages under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Misplaced Pages. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Misplaced Pages (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Misplaced Pages page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:13, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Scottish counties - new user needing guidance
I have tried my best, as have several other editors, but it appears that this new(ish) user just refuses to familiarise himself with Misplaced Pages guidelines and policy. Could you give them a friendly helping hand? I suspect that their heart is in the right place, but if things continue in the same fashion the conclusion is inevitable:

- Thank you for the redirect! Any good pictures? We have problems with that. Queen Victoria is not exactly a wally dug, (present picture). Main Page appearance: Áedán mac Gabráin
This is a note to let the main editors of Áedán mac Gabráin know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 31, 2013. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/December 31, 2013. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Misplaced Pages:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Áedán mac Gabráin was a king of Dál Riata from circa 574 until circa 609. The kingdom of Dál Riata was situated in modern Argyll and Bute, Scotland, and parts of County Antrim, Ireland. Genealogies record that Áedán was a son of Gabrán mac Domangairt. He was a contemporary of Saint Columba, and much that is recorded of his life comes from hagiography such as Adomnán of Iona's Life of Saint Columba. Other sources include Bede's Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum and Irish annals; none of the sources are contemporary. Áedán appears as a character in Old Irish and Middle Irish language works of prose and verse, some now lost. Áedán also appears in some Welsh sources, making him one of the few non-Britons to figure into Welsh tradition. The Irish annals record his campaigns against his neighbours, in Ireland, and in northern Britain, including expeditions to the Orkney Islands, the Isle of Man, and the east coast of Scotland. As recorded by Bede, Áedán was decisively defeated by Æthelfrith of Bernicia at the Battle of Degsastan. Áedán may have been deposed, or have abdicated, following this defeat, and the annals report nothing of him until his death around six years later. (Full article...)

And a happy New Year to you!
Hi Angus, Thanks for your seasonal message. We seem to have been here for years! I noticed the programme but didn't hear it 'live': but I'm glad to know that M.C. is propounding his wisdom. And, indeed, that you are. As usual I'm floundering about in domestic worries but I just like to dip in here from time to time with a nugget or two and greet old friends. Misplaced Pages seems to have come quite a way since I made my first edit in 2006 but bits of it are still recognizable. Sometimes, away from the contumacious highway, one finds oneself still in a cobbled street or on an old cart-track which hasn't been edited for ages, and there is a whiff of nostalgia about it. One hardly likes to disturb the dust! I hope you're in good sorts - all the best for 2014. yours Eebahgum (talk) 01:36, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Philip of France, Archdeacon of Paris
The article Philip of France, Archdeacon of Paris has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Unreferenced for over eight years, fails WP:V
While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Stifle (talk) 11:51, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
