iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are upcoming smartphones designed by Apple Inc. The devices were announced on September 7, 2016 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook, and are being pre-ordered by September 9, 2016. The The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus jointly serve as successors to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus and they are the current flagship devices of the iPhone series, which will be readily available in the market by September 16, 2016.
The iPhone 7 features notable hardware upgrades over its predecessor, including a new quad-core system-on-chip with improved system and graphics performance, updated displays, water resistance, stereo speakers, upgraded cameras, and a new dual-camera system exclusive to the larger 7 Plus model. The 3.5 mm headphone jack was notably removed; the device now ships with in-ear headphones that plug into the Lightning port, as well as a Lightning adapter for 3.5 mm headphones.
Specifications
The iPhone 7 is similar in design to the iPhone 6S, though with a "mirrored" finish, and is offered in a new darker "Jet Black" color option alongside the new black and the existing white, gold, and rose-gold colors. The "3D Touch" system from the 6S was retained, and the home button was updated to also feature force sensitivity. The iPhone 7 does not feature a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack; it was replaced by a second speaker grill. This is the first iPhone where it is not possible to use wired headphones and charge the device at the same time. A headphone jack adapter which plugs into the Lightning port is included. The iPhone 7 features the Apple A10 Fusion system-on-chip, which consists of two low-power cores and two high-power cores. The A10 also features a 6-core graphics chip capable of "console-level gaming". As with prior models, the iPhone 7 is available in two sizes: one with a 4.7-inch screen, and a "iPhone 7 Plus" variant with a 5.5-inch screen. The displays have identical sizes and resolutions to the 6S (720p and 1080p), but with an increased color gamut and brightness. Both device variants also contain a new iteration of Apple's motion coprocessor, the M10.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is currently the only iPhone and only Apple device line with the minimum internal capacity of 32GB. However, since the minimum internal capacity is 32GB, the cost of getting an iPhone will be more expensive, costing £599 minimum, while the 256GB capacity version will go up to £799.
Accessories
The Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter will be sold by Apple as an accessory as well, with an MSRP of US$9. Alongside the iPhone 7, Apple also unveiled AirPods—wireless Bluetooth in-ear headphones, as well as three new Beats headphone products. All four products utilize an in-house wireless chip known as Apple W1, which is designed to provide low-power Bluetooth operation and integration with iOS and macOS products (although they are still compatible with other Bluetooth-supported devices).
