iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are upcoming smartphones designed by Apple Inc. The devices were announced on September 7, 2016 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco by Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus jointly serve as successors to the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus; they are scheduled to be released on September 16, 2016, with pre-orders beginning on September 9, 2016.

The iPhone 7 features notable hardware upgrades over its predecessor, including a new quad-core system-on-chip with improved system and graphics performance, updated displays, water resistance, stereo speakers, upgraded cameras, and a new dual-camera system exclusive to the larger 7 Plus model. The 3.5 mm headphone jack was notably removed, although the device ships with an adapter and earphones which plug into the Lightning port as an alternative. Due to the removal, it is no longer possible to use wired headphones while charging the phone. The iPhone 7 has more color options than previous models. The options for available storage start at 32GB.

Specifications

Hardware

The iPhone 7 is similar in design to the iPhone 6S, though with a "mirrored" finish, and is offered in a new darker "Jet Black" color option alongside the new black and the existing white, gold, and rose-gold colors. The "3D Touch" system from the 6S was retained, and the home button was updated to also feature force sensitivity. The iPhone 7 does not feature a 3.5 mm headphone jack; it was replaced by a second speaker grill. A Lightning to 3.5 mm connector adapter, as well as in-ear headphones that use a Lightning connector, are bundled with the device. The Lightning adapter will also be sold independently.

The iPhone 7 features the Apple A10 Fusion system-on-chip, which consists of two low-power cores and two high-power cores. The A10 also features a 6-core graphics chip capable of "console-level gaming". As with prior models, the iPhone 7 is available in two sizes: one with a 4.7-inch screen, and a "Plus" variant with a 5.5-inch screen. The displays have identical sizes and resolutions to the 6S (720p and 1080p), but with an increased color gamut and brightness. Both device variants also contain a new iteration of Apple's motion coprocessor, the M10. Unlike previous iPhone models, internal storage options for the iPhone 7 begin at 32 GB instead of 16 GB.

The iPhone 7 comes with a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera. This camera has a larger aperture than the previous iPhone models. The 7 features "optical image stabilization", meaning the image is more steady. The phone also has another rear-facing camera; a 56mm telephoto lens on the back of the phone, acting as a zoom. The front-facing camera is a 7-megapixel, five megapixels more than the iPhone 6. Unlike the rear-facing camera, the front-facing camera features "auto-image stabilization".

Also the iPhone 7 is the first in the iPhone series which is water and dust resistant. The new iPhones are also water-resistant with an IPX67 rating which means the hardware can withstand immersion in up to 1 metre of water for 30 minutes.

The iPhone 7 will ship with iOS 10 pre-installed.

Design

The iPhone 7 launches two new colors: Black and Jet Black. Black replaces the Space Gray color used on the iPhone 5S, 6, 6S, and SE, and features the same black glass front with a new darker grey rear panel. The Jet Black model features an aluminum back panel, like the other colors, but the high gloss of Jet Black is created with a "magnetized ultra-fine ion particle bath" which polishes the anodized layer.

Accessories

The Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter will be sold by Apple as an accessory as well as being included with the device, with an MSRP of US$9. Alongside the iPhone 7, Apple also unveiled AirPods—wireless Bluetooth in-ear headphones, as well as three new Beats headphone products. All four products are not included with the device and utilize an in-house wireless chip known as Apple W1, which is designed to provide low-power Bluetooth operation and integration with iOS and macOS products (although they are still compatible with other Bluetooth-supported devices).
