It has been suggested that this page be merged with Blocking policy. (Discuss)

In the course of daily operations, substantial numbers of users and IP addresses are blocked, mainly due to persistent vandalism and violations of the three-revert rule. Such users frequently wish to be unblocked.

How to request to be unblocked

  1. Users wishing to be unblocked must first contact the blocking admin and allow a reasonable amount of time for a reply. You may contact the blocking admin by leaving a message on your talk page, which you may still edit even though you are blocked. You may also contact the blocking admin via email.
  2. You may also discuss the matter informally using IRC or by emailing other editors who are familiar with your work.
  3. If your block will expire in the next day or two, we suggest you wait, because your block will expire before the appeal process completes.
  4. If, after discussing the matter with the blocking admin, you either get no reply or are not satisfied with the reply, you may appeal the matter by sending an email to unblock-en-l@wikipedia.org. Be aware that your email will be made public. Be sure to include your user name or IP address in the message along with a short summary of the situation, including the reason you were blocked.

What happens next

  1. Wikipedians will review your editing history, which has been logged, as well as the reason for the block.
  2. If there is agreement that you may have been blocked unfairly, Wikipedians will work on your behalf with the blocking admin. You may be unblocked as a result, if the blocking admin changes their mind, can't be reached, or (in very rare cases) if it is determined by others that the admin made a mistake.
  3. Once you have been unblocked, you may use the dispute resolution process if you believe that you were treated unfairly.
  4. This process usually takes several days.

Other possible appeal steps

In highly unusual cases, you may wish to utilize the dispute resolution process while you are still blocked. To do so, you may contact other Wikipedians by email, or by editing your talk page (which you may do even while blocked).
