Daniel Dominik Kaiser-Küblböck (born 27 August 1985; disappeared 9 September 2018) is a German pop-singer and actor who achieved short-lived celebrity status from late 2002 until 2004 in the media coverage that surrounded the first season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS), the German version of Pop Idol, in which he came third. He was briefly promoted as Daniel K, but reverted to Daniel Küblböck as this name had already been trademarked.

Career

Daniel rose to stardom in late 2002 when he participated in the first season of Deutschland sucht den Superstar (DSDS), which was a massive ratings hit. Despite his high-pitched voice not being considered good, he became very popular with the audience due to his special appearance and finished the show on third place.

After DSDS, Küblböck signed a contract with BMG. By June 2004 he had released four successful singles and one album. However, after appearing in Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus! (the German version of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!), his later releases proved less popular.

In August 2004, the motion picture Daniel – Der Zauberer (Daniel The Wizard), directed by Ulli Lommel, was released, which starred Daniel as a fictionalized version of himself. The film was critically panned and is now regarded as one of the worst films of all time, and also bombed at the box office, which marked the end of his popularity as a media star.

He was voted by the viewers of the German Tabloid TV channel Pro7 as the most annoying personality of 2003 and the second most annoying person in 2004.

In 2005, he appeared in the sixth season of the German version of Big Brother, and in 2015, he took part in the eighth season of the German version of Let's Dance, where he finished sixth, together with his dancing partner Otlile Mabuse. In 2013, he wanted to participate in the German national final for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest with his new song Be A Man, but was rejected by the jury.

Personal life

Daniel Küblböck had four siblings. He had German and Italian ancestors. Küblböck completed his Hauptschule education in 2001. His older brother Michael, who was described as a neo-Nazi in German tabloids, died on 3 January 2013 in Berlin due to a heroin overdose. They had not had any contact for many years prior to Michael's death.

In 2010, he came out as homosexual for the first time, after previously describing himself as bisexual.

On 24 February 2004, Daniel Küblböck caused a car crash with a truck, which received nationwide media attention. He suffered serious injuries. Küblböck was fined €25,000 and sentenced to eight hours of community service for driving without a license.

Entrepreneurial activity

Küblböck invested the proceeds from his album Positive Energie amounting to around one million euros in a solar plant in Lower Bavaria, which brought him high profits. In September 2003, he launched a perfume line for boys and girls in three fragrances under his name. From 2005 to the end of 2013, he was managing director of the sales company Positive Energie GmbH Daniel Küblböck, with which he marketed his person. It was deleted from the German Trade Register in 2016.

2018 disappearance

Küblböck has been missing since 9 September 2018. He was on a private trip from Hamburg to New York City on the cruise ship AIDAluna off the coast of Newfoundland. On one with "Artist. Actress. Transexual" unverified Instagram account, he had published selfies in women's clothing during the voyage.

According to the cruise company Aida Cruises, a passenger jumped overboard around five o'clock in the morning (local time). The Canadian Coast Guard then launched a search operation. The company confirmed in a press release that the missing person was Daniel Küblböck.

The site is located about 185 km north of St. John's in the Labrador Sea. The water temperature in the area was about 10 °C. In addition to the AIDAluna, the cruise ship MS Zuiderdam also participated in the search.

On September 10, 2018, the Canadian Coast Guard stopped the search because the maximum survival time in cold water was too short to save him. On September 11, Küblböck's family announced on the official website their mourning for their son Daniel and found that the hoped-for a "great miracle" of a rescue had not come true. Under German law, a person missing on sea can be declared dead after six months.

In the weeks before the cruise, according to his father, his environment had noticed a sudden change of character and psychological problems at Küblböck and heavily tried to prevent him from making the journey. According to a passenger that resided in the neighboring cabin, Küblböck had called himself Dana, wanted to be recognized as a woman and was heard talking to himself, screaming and kicking. Some passengers also recalled him wearing women's clothes.
