Serzh Azati Sarkisyan (Armenian Սերժ Ազատի Սարգսյան, born on June 30, 1954 in Stepanakert, then part of the Azerbaijan SSR, today in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic) is the Defense Minister of Armenia.

Life timeline

  • 1976: Graduated from The Yerevan State University
  • 1975–1979: Worked as a turner at Yerevan’s electro-technical factory
  • 1979–1988: Chief of state department, first secretary. Stepanakert Municipal Committee's Propaganda and Agitation chief of department. Deputy Chief of Nagorno Karabakh Regional Committee.
  • 1989–1993: The leader of The Committee of Nagorno-Karabakh Defense Army. Member of the National Assembly of Armenia.
  • 1993–1995: Republic of Armenia Defense Minister
  • 1996–1999: Republic of Armenia’s National Security Minister
  • 1999–2000: Chief of President’s Apparatus and National Security Council
  • 2000–present: Republic of Armenia’s Defense Minister

Other details

Serzh Sarkisyan is the organizer of many battles in the Nagorno-Karabakh war. He is considered to be one of the founders of NKR's and Armenian Military Forces.

He is married and has two children.

Sarkisyan has a vast personal fortune, primarily originating from his near monopoly on the import of petroleum to Armenia.{{verify source}} The monopoly is not official, but due to his position he is able to maintain it.{{verify source}}
