Vladimir Tismăneanu (b. July 4, 1951 in Braşov) is a well-known historian and commentator on Romanian current affairs. Resident for many years in the United States, he is a frequent visitor to Romania.
Tismăneanu is currently a professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland, and the director of the University of Maryland's Center for the Study of Post-Communist Societies.
His published works include: Reinventing Politics: Eastern Europe from Stalin to Havel (Free Press, 1994), Fantasies of Salvation: Democracy, Nationalism and Myth in Post-Communist Europe (Princeton University Press, 1998), and Stalinism for All Seasons: A Political History of Romanian Communism (University of California Press, 2003).
