Vladimir Tismăneanu, is an Romanian-American politologist and commentator on Romanian current affairs. Born in România, he is the son of the Soviet commisaire Leonid Tismineţki, surnamed Ciungul. He graduated the University of Bucharest (1974), where he also obtained his Ph.D. (]). Prior to leaving România, his publications were supportive to the communist regime , . He is a professor at Maryland State University. Tismaneanu is a specialist în political systems and compared politics. Editor of the East European Politics and Societies academic review and director of the Center for the Study of Post-Communist Societies.
