Joan Eileen Hocquard (born 29 March 1908) is the oldest person in the UK.

Early life

Joan was born in her mother's house in Holland Park in London. Her father, Reginald Reynolds (1875-1970), was an officer in the colonial marine departments in the British Empire in West and East Africa. Her mother, Elizabeth Loughborough (1878-1957), came from a well-off family through a partnership in a City law firm. Joan spent some of her childhood in Kisumu in Kenya (where her brother Christopher was born in 1913) and some at her grandmother's house in London. She went to boarding school in Bexhill in Sussex.

As a young woman, she spent nine years working at a hotel in France near the Alps in the 1930s, and returned home just before the Second World War. In 1942, she married Emile Gilbert Hocquard, a keen sailor whom she met when he tied his boat up next to her father's at Lymington in Hampshire. They had no children. She worked as an ambulance driver in London at the start of the war before she and her husband moved to East Dean near Eastbourne.

Later life

After the war she and her husband settled in Seaford, Sussex and then at Canford Cliffs near Bournemouth. They had a yacht Peregrine in which they often sailed to France, the Channel Islands and the Scilly isles. Gilbert Hocquard died in 1983 and Joan moved to a flat near Poole harbour.

Oldest person

On 24 December 2019, Joan Hocquard became the joint-oldest person in the UK, along with Bob Weighton. On 28 May 2020, on Bob Weighton's death, Hocquard became the oldest person in the UK.
