On 31 December 2024, during the broadcast of the New Year's Eve on Spanish TV channel La 1, Spanish actress and comic Laura Yustres, also known as Lalachus, showed a picture of the Sacred Heart with the Grand Prix famous cattle.

Context

Lalachus, collaborator of David Broncano, presenter since September 2024 on La 1 of La revuelta, the continuation of La resistencia, in Spain. This program, in rivalry with Antena 3's El Hormiguero, had been in discussion for months. Both Lalachus and Broncano were in charge of starring in the end of the year bells on La 1. When it became public, Lalachus was criticized through social media in attacks of social stigma of obesity.

An article in El País titled "Los kilos de Chicote y Lalachus" mentioned that everyone criticized Lalachus for her body for being a woman while they did not pay attention to that of Chicote, presenter of the bells on Antena 3, for being a man.

During the broadcast, they carried out several jokes, such as greeting the protagonists of the New Year's bells on Antena 3, Alberto Chicote and Cristina Pedroche, which some media outlets considered "history of television in Spain". They were record audiences.

Controversy

During the last seconds of 2024, Lalachus showed before the cameras a picture of the Grand Prix, a La 1 television program, starring the iconic Grand Prix heifer, which represented the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She showed the picture, while defending public television and saying:

I always carry my picture of the Grand Prix heifer with me. It's the best, listen to me, we've all grown up watching the Grand Prix. How important television is, the public one in this case more than any other because it has made the whole family around the TV enjoying it a lot and also, you, I and many people are made of bits of TV…

This image has been, in recent years, widely used and recreated with singers, athletes and all types of public figures, which have been 'sanctified', always in a joking tone or within the meme category. However, what Lalachus did in the last minutes of the year 2024 received numerous criticisms both on social networks and by religious associations. Other prints of Fernando Alonso, Pedri or Juanmi Jiménez did not cause controversy.

Complaint

Hazte Oír and the Abogados Cristianos announced on January 1, 2025 that they were going to sue Lalachus, David Broncano, RTVE and its president José Pablo López for "a possible hate crime and against religious feelings." On January 2, 2025, the Spanish Episcopal Conference said that it was joining the case.

Reactions

Since the incident, several people have taken a stand for or against Lalachus:

Against

Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, charged hard. The influencer Tomás Páramo also took a position against it. The archbishop of Seville, José Ángel Saiz Meneses, positioned himself against. Luis Argüello, president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, took a position against it, calling it a "mockery." José Manuel Soto positioned against.

In favor

Spanish Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, came out in support saying in a message published on the social network X that "freedom of expression and creation must be a fundamental pillar in a democratic society." In addition, the minister announced that the Government will promote the reform of the crime of religious offenses this year, framing it in the Action Plan for Democracy, an initiative that seeks to protect fundamental rights such as artistic freedom.

Jordi Évole was in favor, saying that in reference to the people who criticize that "they needed a burning nail to hold on to." Gabriel Rufián took a position in favor, charging against the offended. Anne Igartiburu commented on Lalachus' Instagram profile after the controversy. Jesús Cintora said, supporting Lalachus, that "if that is the biggest scandal, how is this country doing so that it is more scandalous to take out a print with a drawing of a heifer than to show the tails of hunger or precariousness? What is happening? That "They are not really shocked by the image, what is shocking is that it is shocking that this type of program is running that allows another speech or another type of image." Iñaki López was in favor.
