I know that a large group of Admins are planning a concerted unblock. I appreciate the sentiment, but ask that they do not. The Arbcom created this mess - they can sort it. I made 3 edits because I thought I was unblocked - and that the auto-thing was on the account still (like it almost always is after a block runs out). If people think I am so stupid as to sign my name on a block evasion, then that is more insulting than all the other insults concerning me scattered all over the place. Giano (talk) 07:51, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

A majority of the Committee (FloNight, NewYorkBrad, Sam Blacketer, YellowMonkey, Kirill Lokshin, FT2 and myself) agree to reduce the block to 24 hours.

Thank goodness you reblocked Giano for the fourteen minutes remaining in the the adjusted block duration! It would have been an utter travesty if he'd been permitted to edit a second sooner than the all-knowing ArbCom decided, and we certainly wouldn't want it to appear as though the block was lifted because the community refused to tolerate a ridiculous, punitive decision. No, this makes it clear that everything's going according to plan, and no one can argue that Giano was blocked longer than he should have been (because the decision was handed down with fourteen minutes to spare). Bravo!
Switching gears, welcome back, Giano. I don't always care for your conduct, but what you just went through was stunningly absurd. —David Levy 17:17, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Interesting diffs

Just in case any of you were stupid enough to think that the Ombudsmen was there to protect your privacy "I'm reminded of the characters in Solzhenitsyn's novels."

Looking ahead

Would you consider running for Arbcom next year (2009)? GoodDay (talk) 19:55, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

I don't need to run. Last year was quite enough. JWales knows where to find me. Giano (talk) 20:43, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Okie Dokie. GoodDay (talk) 20:46, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Banqueting House

I've copied our sparkling conversation from last night to Talk:Banqueting House, Whitehall. --Joopercoopers (talk) 21:01, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

Good idea. Did you remember the After 8s and Marque de Rothschild? Giano (talk) 21:07, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm a slave to Rioja at the moment I'm afraid, can't seem to enjoy anything else, a good Shiraz is as far as I'll venture, and after 8s go terribly with either. --Joopercoopers (talk) 21:50, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

I made a few tweaks to the page. Part of it was coercing the ref page numbers into a consistent look. If you want a different standard, it's an easy nudge. I also bypassed some redirects and disambiguation pages. If you would like techie tweaks to other pages, just ask. Welcome home. Cheers, Jack Merridew 07:10, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Thoughts

Giano, I believe you to be a loyal and caring person. In return, many people are your loyal friends. When you live dangerously, others take great risks defending you. I very much appreciate your statement above, "I know that a large group of Admins are planning a concerted unblock. I appreciate the sentiment, but ask that they do not. The Arbcom created this mess - they can sort it." Next time something like this happens, that is an excellent approach. Jehochman 12:16, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

  • I very much hope there will not be a next time. The statement above was to stop a situation which I thought would degenerate into wiki-carnage with immense long term damage to the project. I take the view that this Arbcom is finished in 2 weeks anyway, we can be patient. However, you are very wrong on one score. More often than not those that risk their wiki-tools for me are not amongst my band of close wiki-friends. This is certainly the cases most recently with both Slim Virgin and Moreschi - SV I have a distant friendship with, Moreschi I hardly know (that is no disrespect to him, our paths have just not often crossed) what you are not seeing is that people act as they do because they agree with what I say, or they may not even much like me, but they see the travesties that are going on around them, and act because they think that is the right thing to do. I can ask people to behave in certain ways as a favour derived from friendship, I will leave tampering with consciences to priests. People are their own masters. If you look through my blocklog you will see (I,m not going to embarrass them with a list) that is most often the case. Geogre was the only close friend whoever unblocked me, and anyone who knows him well will know that Geogre is certainly his own master and certainly not an sycophantic acolyte of mine. On brighter note, I have a feeling Misplaced Pages has a wonderful New Year ahead of it - I hope we all survive to enjoy it. Giano (talk) 14:31, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
