Silva, the most common surname in Portugal and Brazil, it is particularly prevalent among those of Portuguese descent and is analogous to the last name "Smith" in English since it's extremely widespread throughout the Portuguese speaking world. The word came originally from Latin, meaning woods and, by extension, people that came from forested areas. It was adopted in western Iberia when conquered by Ancient Rome in 219 BC.
