Nationalist China was a common name that describes the Republic of China, when the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party) was in power. It spanned from 1928 with the Northern Expedition to 1949 with the defeat of Kuomintang and the establishment of the People's Republic of China on the mainland.

It was also an informal name that refers to the Republic of China on Taiwan, during the Cold War. The term has fallen out of favor since multi-party elections ushered the Democratic Progressive Party into power. Nowadays "Nationalist China" almost exclusively refers to the peirod of Kuomintang rule on the mainland.

A related term is "National Government" (or Nationalist Government) (Chinese: 國民政府). This was the Kuomintang government during its existence on mainland China, to differentiate it from the Beiyang, warlord, and communist governments. After its move to Taiwan, the name was changed to "Central Government" (Chinese: 中央政府).
