Van Rensselaer is a surname of Dutch origin. van is a Dutch preposition meaning from and is a common prefix in Dutch language surnames. The "v" is written in lower case, except when the surname is used as a standalone or the beginning of a sentence.

Most of the Van Rensselaers emigrated from the Netherlands to the colony, New Netherland. They settled primarily in the area now comprising the state of New York.
