thesurvivor2299.com is a website supposedly acquired by ZeniMax Media on November 13, 2013, according to its WHOis report. It speculates a possible Fallout title release, however this has yet to be confirmed by Bethesda Softworks (the publisher and developer of Fallout), who has declined to comment, or ZeniMax Media (the parent company of Bethesda). The site has a countdown clock counting down to December 11, 2013. The site also has Morse code playing in a loop, all on a black background (see collapsible image on the right).

The website was uncovered on November 14, 2013 by Reddit users. Since then, the site has sported a few changes, including differentiations in the Morse code and a second countdown clock exclaiming "Nuclear winter is coming in xx Hours yy Minutes zz Seconds" (which has ended).

"The Survivor" may refer to the player character in such a game, as in past Fallout titles the player character has been referred to as "The Vault Dweller", "The Chosen One", "The Warrior", "The Lone Wanderer" and "The Courier". The numbers 2299 most likely refer to a year, which would mean the game would be taking place 22 years after the events of Fallout 3 and 18 years after the events of Fallout: New Vegas.

It should be noted that as of December 1, 2013, Bethesda has declined to comment on the website.

Speculation and controversy

Domain

The domain thesurvivor2299.com was acquired by ZeniMax Media on November 13, 2013. The WHOis report lists the correct address, contact information, etc., to ZeniMax Media. However, this could have easily been faked. The original I.P. address of the site was located in Poland then transferred to Maryland, where ZeniMax Media and Bethesda Softworks is located. It is highly suspicious of a major United States company to host a website in Europe.

ZeniMax registered both Wolfenstein's and The Elder Scolls' domains through Corporate Domains Inc, while thesurvivor2299.com was registered with GoDaddy.com. Meanwhile, ZeniMax uses its own DNS servers for its registrations (ns1.zenimax.com) while thesurvivor2299.com uses a separate, self-branded server: ns1.thesurvivor2299.com.

Countdown clocks

The main countdown clock counts down to the date of December 11, 2013 3:00pm EST. The second countdown clock counted down to December 1, 2013 at 3:35pm EST. The second countdown clock had a phrase in front of it - "Nuclear winter is coming in countdown here".

The second countdown clock has ended, saying, "KVNGR REV ALPHA PPS VT PIZ UHMYLPVOQ CM XHWMZP. NBJB SPI'F BYQS QT D'Y BYFGEOB FI VQDYL MAQ. -NGQHT 5120-". See "Nuclear winter" below for the decipherment.

Morse code audio

The first Morse code audio clip that was featured on the site can be translated to "11-12-13 12-11-13," which is the European and North American date formats for the end date of the main countdown clock.

The second audio loop of Morse code was translated by Reddit users to:

"My dear sister, I'm heading to the Institute. God knows what happened to this place now. This old bastard will help us. He must help us. —0321—".

The Institute is current day MIT in the Fallout universe, which was extensively mentioned in Fallout 3. Note that Fallout primarily takes place in the late 2200s. Rumors have spread around the internet since around last year about the next Fallout title taking place in Boston, Massachusetts primarily because of the mass references to it in Fallout 3.

An example of "SOS" in Morse code

The third Morse code audio file translates to:

"Calling any station, calling any station, calling any station, Boston is gone, I say again, Boston is gone, no Hope, frequency 3450, return transmission, goodbye/God Bless America".

The newest and fourth Morse code audio can be translated to:

"Calling all stations, this is Overseer 119 emergency enemy unknown, SOS. Vault 119 Quabbin 7667, repeat, SOS, Vault 119 Quabbin 7667 enemy unknown." 'Quabbin' may be a reference to Quabbin Reservoir in central Massachusetts.

Frequency 3450 kHz

The Pirate Radio Forum went so far as to listen to frequency 3450 kHz in the Boston area on November 27, 2013 and the following days. Frequency 3450 kHz is reserved as an aviation frequency and it appears that there was no record of a flight test, of any description, having been registered for this spot. However, it was discovered that the frequency is legal to use for "non-Federal flight test purposes on the condition that harmful interference will not be caused to services operating in accordance with the Table of Frequency Allocations". The broadcast features an EAS siren and a DTMF signal reading "IMSECURE," (I'm secure) a likely response to a "return transmission". Other transmissions such as a woman's voice saying something along the lines of "the next transmission will be a 2 o'clock" and faint EAS sirens could be heard over the next six hours since the original transmission.

Nuclear winter

The "nuclear winter" began on December 1, 2013.

After the countdown timer ended for the beginning of nuclear winter, this message was displayed:

"KVNGR REV ALPHA PPS VT PIZ UHMYLPVOQ CM XHWMZP. NBJB SPI'F BYQS QT D'Y BYFGEOB FI VQDYL MAQ. -NGQHT 5120- Nuclear winter has come."

The message means, when deciphered: "The Institute is sealed. They won't help us; I'm heading to Black Row -TBNLS 5120-". The way that the message was deciphered is as follows:

The beginning of the message laid out the format to decipher it: KVNGR (Keyed Vigenere) REV ALPHA (Reversed Alphabet) PPS VT (Passphrase Vault-tec).

More coded messages

On December 4, 2013, a new coded message was displayed on the page: "AK: {REV _____ 5120} PASS {LOC BB YEAR LET} - | H EY XHWHD OF GXSIHS EVE, ZFR G'K ATGEVY ROCL'JM QEOX. GTJX ZSFF QRETYHA HWEUHG WG VKKP HHWE. MCCCZNU SQ UUE VMXECEDCZ. MFE BNMC NEGE QLZCR TP MZ MR YUOG ACBSM. |

Translates to: "I am sorry to inform you, but I’m afraid they’re dead. Your life support system is just fine. Welcome to The Institute. The only safe place to be in this world".

VT119

By going to a hidden page on the survivor2299 site, http://thesurvivor2299.com/VT119/ , It brings up a new saying "SY684> OVERRIDING PROTOCOL VT-15812 WITH KEY '7667'" this is followed by a flashing "UNKNOWN ENEMY DETECTED". If the middle of the page is highlighted it brings up a secret Morse code "REV FEAR - MGSS LHM'H EVHV KBIM'R QIUBMU. CB'L Z YYG MN HBM ZQSUB ZZAY". This translates to "They don’t know what’s coming. it’s a key to the great game". VT119 is believed to have stood for Vault 119 or Vault Tec 119, this could be hinting at it being a main point in the game. With the UNKNOWN ENEMY DETECTED flashing, and previous morse code signals being sent out, it is understood that the vault is under attack and losing. At one point the code translates to (on the main page) "Calling Black Row. Outpost; ground is safe. Too late, level 4 breach. no survivors, 899 corpses. We are leaving Vault 119. Over, back to you." It is now believed that Vault 119 has fallen.
