Bigg Boss 8 is the eighth season of the Indian reality television show Bigg Boss, which started broadcasting on the TV channel Colors from 21 September 2014. Bigg Boss is the Indian edition of Big Brother. Salman Khan returned as the host of the series for the fifth time. Snapdeal was chosen to be the new presenting sponsor of the show which ended Colors’ five-year deal with Vodafone India for Bigg Boss.

Eye logo

The official eye logo was unveiled by Colors TV on 15 August 2014 in the season teaser on YouTube. It had a futuristic look unlike the previous version which were depictions of a human eye with tweaks to coincide with the theme in the house. The eye sported a pupil with a turbofan of an aircraft while the borders of the eye having the shiny metallic skin. Speculations have insisted that the theme of the season has been adopted from the occurrence of the three fatal commercial airline crashes which had occurred, in a one-week span, during the former month involving Malaysia, Algeria and Taiwan airlines.

From week 3 onwards, only a part of the public vote results were delivered on Saturday and the eviction results were announced on Sunday.

Production

House theme

The house for the eighth season is located in Lonavla and has been designed to resemble a jumbo aircraft. With the interior of an aircraft the house is said to have a waiting lounge and separate sections for Business and Economy classes.

House

The house of the season was a subject of controversy for the first week. For the first time in the history of the Big Brother franchise the main house was not revealed on the launch night or further down the initial week. The housemates were located to a 'Plane Crash' area situated in the main garden. The area resembled a wide-body aircraft embedded into the ground with the background of a jungle. The area was meant to look like the crash site of a jumbo airplane. The area had no bedroom or gym. After the first eviction the house was made available to the housemates. The physical layout of the house remained mostly unchanged from the previous series, however the house theme was changed to an Alpine chalet, with lots of wood, fur and leather furnishings.

Secret society

On launch night, it was revealed that there was a place adjacent to the 'Plane crash' area known as 'The Secret Society.' Later, Deepshika, Pritam and Puneet were chosen by Bigg Boss to become cult celebrities who would live in the society in secret, away from the rest of the housemates. It was then announced that they would have the power to nominate housemates of their choice to face the first public vote and have immunity from nomination. On day 3, the secret society revealed itself to the viewers as per Bigg Boss' order and introduced themselves. On Day 5 Puneet was moved to plane crash area and later on Day 8 the other two secret society members Deepshika and Pritam joined him.

The house area allotment was chosen by Bigg Boss.
Puneet was moved to the Plane Crash area as a result of the unanimous decision taken by all three members of the Secret Society as per Bigg Boss' order. They were to select the member who wasn't eligible for the society anymore.
Deepshika and Pritam were moved to the 'Plane Crash' area following Sonali's eviction interview.
As a result of winning the Hijack task Deepshika and her team were moved to the main house. Bigg Boss also later moved Praneet's team to the main house as a result of their impressive performance in the task.
Sonali entered the main house via the confession room after the housemates were done nominating.
Ali entered the main house as the first wild card entry.
In a twist of the eviction process, Minissha and Puneet were told they had both been evicted but were kept in a secret room where they watched the live feed. Minissha was later evicted.
Renee and Dimpy entered the main house as second and third wild card entries respectively.
Nigaar entered the main house as the fourth wild card entry.

Guest appearances and Special Panel

This season of Bigg Boss had a new twist of 'Special Panel',where a team of past guest houses would share their and the public's views and opinions of the current housemates before the eviction. The panel would rotate every week.

Weekly summary

The main events in the house are summarised in the table below. A typical week began with nominations, followed by the shopping task, and then the eviction of a housemate during the Saturday episode. Evictions, tasks, and other events for a particular week are noted in order of sequence.

Week 1	Task	Qurbaniyaan Housemates were tested by a round of punishments handed out by the secret society. These casual punishments were termed as 'sacrifices'. This became the first shopping task for the housemates living in the aircraft. On Day 1, the secret society decided to withhold the luggage of six housemates namely Diandra, Sushant, Upen, Minissha, Praneet and Karishma. After a task where these housemates played a game of truth with the society Karishma, Upen, Sushant and Manissha's bags were returned. On Day 2, the society decided to withdraw the supply of water from the house and in order for the supply to be allowed back Manissha and Sukirti were to paddle a bicycle for the duration of their usage. On Day 2, Aarya was chosen by the housemates while Soni was appointed by the secret society to abstain from food until further notice as part of the society's punishment. On Day 2, Diandra and Sushant were chosen by the society to stand in an upright position without moving until the release of the punishment.

	Reward	The housemates were awarded a kitchen complete with amenities to cook their food. Soni and Praneet were chosen by the housemates and Secret Society to be upgraded to the Business Class for their performance in the task.
	Twists	On Day 1, Deepshika, Puneet and Pritam entered a secret area and formed the 'Secret Society'. On Day 5, Bigg Boss asked the secret society members to unanimously decide the member who wasn't eligible to remain in the society anymore. The three members named Puneet and he was hence moved to the plane crash area of the house. Open nominations were done by burning the photos of each other.
	Punishments	On Day 4, Sonali and Gautam broke two of the main ground rules of the house which were 'speaking in a foreign language' and 'sleeping during the day time'. Both were asked to stand on the plane-wing with their backs facing each other's and were not allowed to speak with anyone until further instructions.
	Entrances	On Day 1, Sonali, Karishma, Upen, Soni, Aarya, Diandra, Sushant, Gautam, Sukirti, Praneet, Natasa and Minissha entered the 'Plane Crash' area of the house situated in the main garden. Deepshika, Puneet and Pritam entered the society housing.
	Exits	Sonali Raut was evicted from the house after facing the public vote.

Week 2	Task	Hijack Housemates were tested for their patience during this week's task. One team was required to occupy the seats in the garden area while the other would need to force them out of the seats in order to win the task.

	Reward	Deepshika was awarded immunity from the nomination process and her team, consisting of Karishma, Sushant, Diandra, Aarya, Minissha and Upen moved to the main house.
	Other Tasks	The Xposé On day 12, Bigg Boss assigned Sonali a task to rank the housemates on a scale from 1-10 based on their physical appearance on the screen and their intentions during the game play separately, as she had returned to the house after eviction.
	Twists	Having failed the task, Pritam's team was supposed to stay in the Plane Crash area but Bigg Boss moved them to the main house for their impressive performance during the task, however, they weren't to use any of the house's facilities and amenities. The team also had to unanimously decide two members who would act as servants and serve the housemates during the entire season. The team chose Gautam and Praneet. On Day 11, After the nominations process Sonali returned to the house via the confession room. The eviction for this week happened on Sunday rather than the usual Saturday. On Saturday only part of the verdict was announced and Praneet was saved consequently. Sukirti used her Bigg Bomb to relieve Praneet of his servant status, replacing him with Pritam.
	Punishments	On Day 9, Gautam was made ineligible to vote in this week's nominations as punishment for his violent behaviour with Karishma.
	Exits	Sukirti Kandpal was evicted from the house after facing the public vote.

Week 3	Task	Babbars vs. Lambas Housemates were divided into two families. While the Lamba family was headed by Minissha, Aarya was in charge of the Babbar family. Upen and Sonali were to pose as a couple in love and accomplish the five tasks given by Bigg Boss. Giving a twist to the whole task, Bigg Boss instructed the Lamba family to support the couple in love whereas the Babbar family was asked to stop them from accomplishing their tasks. Babbar family: Aarya, Sonali, Soni, Karishma, Natasa, Puneet and Diandra. Lamba family: Minissha, Upen, Sushant, Deepshika, Pritam, Praneet and Gautam.

	Reward	The winning team was to be given special rights during the nominations, however, this did not happen for reasons unknown.
	Other Tasks	Kis Mein Kitna Hai Dum On day 19, Bigg Boss gave Aarya and Puneet a chance to save themselves from the direct nominations via a task. Both were required to lay on big blocks of ice and the housemates had to decide who to support. Each team then tried to melt a slab of ice to retrieve a "Winner" card. The first team to do so would be the winner, hence saving the person they supported from the nomination.

		TVS Zest Scooter For the second task of day 19, the housemates were divided into two teams headed by Soni and Sonali. The captains had to walk on an uneven ramp while balancing bowls of "fuel" on their heads and carrying luxury items from one end to another. One team member on the other end was supposed to store the items in the scooter. The team to store most items in the given time would be the winner. The winning team mates were each given a TVS Zest Scooter.

		Ek Tha Ghar Housemates were given a task where they had to impersonate each other and enact the highlights of the season so far.
		Main Bhi Rekha The housemates had to come up with a performance to impress Rekha as she visited for the promotion of her film Super Nani. The winner would be awarded a Sari from Rekha.

	Twists	On day 18, upon Bigg Boss' orders, the winning team had to unanimously decide the best performer who would be awarded immunity, the team decided Sonali. The losing team also were to unanimously name two worst performers of the task who in turn would be directly nominated for eviction. The team named Aarya and Puneet. Deepshikha used her Bigg Bomb to add Puneet to the ongoing "Sevak (Servant) Status", to join Gautam and Pritam.
	Punishments	On day 16, as a result of multiple rule violations, specifically by Diandra, Minissha, Sushant, Puneet and Upen, Bigg Boss withheld the weekly ration, allowing the housemates only 10 kg of rice and 2 kg of Dal. Seeing an effort by Minissha to follow the rules, Bigg Boss gave access to the ration on day 18 and left other four defaulters with a warning. As a result of multiple rule violations throughout the week, Bigg Boss decreased the time for housemates to decide on their luxury budget items from 10 minutes to 5 minutes on day 19.
	Exits	Deepshika Nagpal was evicted from the house after facing the public vote.

Week 4	Task	Heroes vs Villains For this task Bigg Boss assigned Karishma and Pritam captains for the teams 'Heroes' and 'Villains' respectively. For the first part of the task, each team captain had to persuade housemates to join their clique by wearing the shirt that represented their team. The team with most members at the end of the day would be the winner. The Heroes team was victorious for having seven members excluding the leader, however for the second part of the task, they had to protect their flag in the garden area while Villains tried to destroy it and replace it with their flag. This led to violent behavior amongst the housemates for which Bigg Boss nullified the task. Later, Bigg Boss announced that Heroes had won the task for winning the first half of the task. 	Reward	The captain of the losing team-Pritam was nominated for eviction for next week. Bigg Boss awarded 1400 luxury budget points to the housemates for the task. But later, 400 and 500 points were awarded to Karishma's and Pritam's teams respectively for their performances in the task. Hence, totaling 2300 points. However, due to various punishments in form of point deductions, the total was 1500 points. Two members of the winning team were to shop for luxury items, decided by Karishma. She decided herself and Diandra.
	Other Tasks	Band Karo Yeh Attyachaar On day 25, Bigg Boss gave Gautam, Pritam and Puneet a chance to free themselves of the servant status. Each were required to explain Ali how responsibly they had done their duties and also had to name another housemate in their place with the reason. Gautam named Minissha, Pritam at first named Soni, but later changed it to Aarya based on a mutual decision among the both, and Puneet chose to stay in the "Sevak Status". Ali agreed with all and hence Minissha and Aarya joined Puneet in the "Sevak Status", freeing Gautam and Pritam.
		Car Dekho Suno Nahi, Dekho The housemates were divided into two teams A and B for this task. Each team had to select two members who would run through an obstacle course in the cut out of a car. The front person would be blindfolded and relied on the other's directions to move about. On the other end of the course, was a puzzle which was to be solved only by the driver of the car without being blindfolded. The team to finish the task in least amount of time would be the winner. The winning team was awarded a gift hamper. Team A: Ali, Karishma, Minissha, Puneet, Sonali, Sushant and Upen Team B: Aarya, Diandra, Gautam, Natasa, Praneet, Pritam and Soni

	Twists	The house captain was given the special power to nominate any housemate directly up for eviction for next week. Ali, being the captain nominated Sushant.
	Punishments	Bigg Boss took away Aarya's right to nominate as a result of him taking the mic off and throwing it into the pool. Bigg Boss nominated Diandra for eviction for her violent behavior towards Sonali. Bigg Boss took away 100 points from the luxury budget due to Upen and Sushant talking in English on various occasions. They were also not allowed to shop for luxury items. Bigg Boss took away 100 points from the luxury budget as a result of Aarya and Minissha conversing with each other without mics. Another 100 points were taken form the luxury budget as housemates weren't careful enough of the mics during the task. As a result of various housemates sleeping during the day, Bigg Boss also took away 500 points from the luxury budget.
	Entrances	On Day 24, Ali Quli Mirza entered the house as a wild card entry.
	Exits	Natasa Stankovic was evicted from the house after facing the public vote. She was escorted out of the house by dancers while other housemates partied unknowingly.

Week 5	Task	BB Mithaiwale The housemates were divided into two teams of stall sweet sellers - Gautam Mithaiwla and Diandra Sweets. Each team had to manufacture different kinds of sweets given by Bigg Boss from the materials provided via a conveyor belt. Four members from each team were allotted as cooks while the remaining tried to effect the progress of the opposite team. For the second day of the task, each team had to order a sweet from the other team. The team to manufacture most delicious sweets at the end of the task as per captain Ali would be declared winner. 	Reward	The winning team had to nominate two members who could potentially become the house captain. The team chose Sushant and Upen. The winning team was awarded 1200 points for their performance along with an additional 300 points for Diandra. They were also responsible for the shopping of luxury items. Bigg Boss also rewarded Ali 300 points for his performance as the captain during the task, amounting the total to 1800 points.
	Other Tasks	House Captaincy Task After Didandra's team named two potential candidates for the next housemate, Bigg Boss announced that one of them would have to face Ali in a task chosen by him. Ali picked Sushant, and the two had to walk on a suspended wire while collecting flags tied above. The winner of the task would become the next house captain.

		Oppo Smartphone Task As a part of the judgment day, Ali had to name 7 housemates of whom one could get their wish granted. The seven members had to look for the cutout of Oppo Smartphone's features in the pool with the right spelling of 'Phone call' behind it. The first to retrieve it would be the winner and awarded with a phone call from home.

	Twists	For the second time this season, open nominations were held. The housemates had to cover the faces of others they wanted to nominate with foam. The house captain was chosen via a task between Ali and Sushant. Soni freed Aarya and Minissha of the servant status and put Gautam and Pritam in their place by using her Bigg Bomb.
	Punishments	Bigg Boss banned Puneet from being nominated as the house captain for his physical violence against Gautam during the task. As a part of the judgement day, Captain Ali had to name a housemate who would be punished. Ali named Praneet and he was tasked with washing dishes from Bigg Boss.
	Exits	Soni Singh was evicted from the house after facing the public vote.

Week 6	Task	Phonebooth A phonebooth was set up in the garden area, for the first time it rang and Karishma picked it up who later handed it over to Puneet and he to Sushant. All three were told on the phone that they are up for nomination if they fail to do the tasks. The tasks were given by Bigg Boss to various housemates and the person on phone had to convince them to accomplish them whichever way possible. If the receiver was able to get at least 2 out of 3 tasks completed they would be saved.

	Reward	Karishma and Puneet saved themselves from Bigg Boss' nominations. Sushant was nominated as a result of failing the task.
	Other Tasks	Aaj Na Chodonga This was the captaincy task as Ali had been stripped off his captain duties. On day 39, Bigg Boss asked the housemates to nominate themselves if they wanted to be the captain, Gautam nominated himself first. As the second person, Upen went in and he was advised by Bigg Boss to reach a unanimous decision by all housemates on who the second contender would be. The housemates chose Upen and him and Gautam then had to choose any two housemates who would help them finish the task. Gautam chose Puneet and Pritam while Upen chose Aarya and Ali. Both contenders had to hold on to a pole while their team mates tried to get the other one off and drag to a white line. The person to reach the line first would be the loser and the other one would become the captain.

	Twists	On being asked to choose the best performer in the task as part of the judgement day, Upen as a captain named Sushant. Sushant got a reward and had to select one person to do all his chores and personal work. The members of 'Sevak Status' were also do the same for the day. Sushant chose Ali. In a twist of the eviction process, Minissha and Puneet were told they had both been evicted but were kept in a secret room where they watched the live feed. Minissha upon her eviction used her Bigg Bomb to free Gautam, Puneet and Pritam of the 'Sevak Status' and name another housemate in their place who would work for all the housemates and wouldn't be allowed to use any of house amenities and luxuries. She chose Sushant as she saw the footage of Sushant and Sonali when Soni left the house.
	Punishments	On day 37, Bigg Boss punished Ali for him indecently touching Sonali against her liking and will. He was stripped of his Captain duties and is never to be nominated again as a captain as long as he stays in the house. Bigg Boss also nominated him for eviction for the next week. Upen named Gautam to be punished as a part of the Judgement Day, and he was to stay in a cage all day and not interact with any housemates but one he chose to keep him company and do his work. He chose Puneet.
	Exits	Minissha Lamba was evicted after facing public vote.

Week 7	Task	Unchi hai Building Like many previous tasks of this season, housemates were divided into two teams - Team A and Team B. Both the teams had to build a building of wooden blocks provided in the garden area, the team with the longest building at the end of the task would be declared winner by Captain Upen. Teams also had to effect the progress of each other in any way possible. Further, a member had to be dedicated to rotating a large wheel as only when the wheel was in motion, his/her respective team could build. Due to several incidents of physical violence, especially of Puneet's violent behaviour towards Aarya which subsequently led to former's ejection, Bigg Boss stopped the task on its first day and postponed it for the second day. Team A: Gautam, Pritam, Puneet, Sonali, Sushant Team B: Aarya, Ali, Diandra, Karishma, Praneet

	Reward	Although both the teams failed the task, Bigg Boss rewarded 600 points for the luxury budget to housemates considering their hard work and passion during the task.
	Other Tasks	On day 43, Bigg Boss asked Karishma and Gautam to come into the confession room, where they both were given a task. Bigg Boss presented ten situations in front of them of which some benefited all the housemates and some only them. They could achieve the first three scenarios they unanimously agreed upon while being blindfolded and showing 'Yes' or 'No' with placards. Both agreed upon only on more utensils for the housemates. Bigg Boss gave them another chance to agree upon one more thing, this time via talking, they agreed on freeing Sushant of 'Sevak Status'. The housemates watched the task on a screen placed in the living room.
	Twists	Captain Upen was asked to nominate five housemates for eviction by Bigg Boss. The housemates could only nominate two out of the five for eviction. Puneet returned to the main house after his ejection on day 46 and was kept in a jail in the garden area, where he was to stay until the eviction on Saturday. He couldn't use any of house amenities and the housemates were to only provide him with food. Captain Upen had to nominate two housemates for captaincy, who would face off in an election. He chose Diandra and Pritam, with the former winning 5 votes to 4. Upon his eviction, Sushant was given a chance to free Puneet from the jail and nominate a housemate to become the 'sevak' (servant) of everyone in the house, same as the punishment given to him by Minissha upon her eviction. But he chose not to utilize the Bigg Bomb and things remained unchanged.
	Entrances	On day 47, Renee and Dimpy entered the main house as second and third wild card entries respectively.
	Exits	On Day 44, Puneet Issar was ejected from the house for physically violating Arya Babbar during the weekly budget task. On Day 49, Sushant Divgikar was evicted from the house after facing public vote.

Week 8	Task	Sab Dhurandar Hotel Ke Andar All the housemates were to become butlers of a hotel and had to serve three guests: Dimpy, Nigaar and Renee. The guests were given a set amount of money of which they could award any amount as tips to any butler for the task they had given them. Only two butlers could be used at a time, and they could only be freed after they had been awarded with tips. Diandar was to act as the Hotel Manager and Puneet wasn't to participate in the task. The butler with most amount of tips at the end of the task would be the winner. Diandra also had to choose the best hotel guest, she chose Dimpy.

	Other Tasks	Asleeyat Ka Aaena For this task, the housemates had to stand in front of a mirror and listen to Renee's opinions of them.
		Captaincy Meray Haath Mein Along with Dimpy and Pritam who had the chance to become the next house captain as a reward of winning the task, the housemates had to unanimously decide another candidate and Diandra had to name one too. The housemates chose Gautam and Diandra named Praneet. The group then had to hold a ring with handles with one of their hands and the person to hold the longest would be awarded with captaincy.

		New Swift Excitement Reborn This task was given to the housemates to shop for their luxury items. A housemate had to drive the car while another on the passenger seat had to stick out of the window and grab the danglers with item name on it. To pass the task, the housemate also had to grab two danglers with car's features on it.

	Twists	Open nomination were held for the third time this season where housemates shredded the photos of two housemates they wanted to be evicted. Daindra chose to fulfill Dimpy's wish as a part of the judgement day who in turn chose to free Puneet from the jail.
	Punishments	Diandra chose Gautam to be punished as a part of the judgement day and he was tasked with polishing around 30 pairs of shoes.
	Entrances	On day 50, Nigaar entered the main house from a special booth, where she was to sit and listen to anything which the housemates wanted to say to the public. The housemates could only choose three people and they decided on Aarya, Karishma and Upen.

Each week bookies take bets from the public on each contestant betting odds on their survival in the game. These bets change from one episode to another depending on how the housemate is portrayed to the public. Controversies

Bullying and Violence

The program came under fire with accusations of homophobia from Pritam Singh towards LGBT housemate Sushant Divgikar. While most contestants had been behaving naturally with Divgikar, Singh was caught mocking Divgikar about his sexual orientation. In the fourth episode of the show, which was aired on September 25, the channel broadcast Pritam saying, "Didi ayi, didi! Behen, kissko nominate karogi, bolo." during the nominations process when Sushant was required to nominate. Since the incident LGBT rights activists have claimed disapproval for Singh's alleged actions and the channel for airing such content.
On Day 8, during the weekly task, Gautam Gulati directed an outburst of rage and abuse at Karishma Tanna who during the time was applying chilli powder on his body in order to force him out of the seat. Rebuffing the concept of the purpose of the task Gulati threw a fit set to threaten Tanna. On retaliation Tanna appealed immediate disqualification of Gulati alongside support from other housemates however producers refrained from intervention. The task was consequently abandoned by both teams. Viacom allegedly upheld 2550 complaints from viewers, saying that the footage was "distressing to watch" and "exceeded the viewers' expectations". The censorship board in India claimed to edit the part out from repeat transmissions.
On Day 45, after a record of previous five warnings regarding use of deliberate force towards fellow housemates, Puneet Issar assaulted Arya Babbar to the extent that his neck muscles cramped and his vocal ability strained. Due to apparent protests from housemates Bigg Boss decided to remove Puneet from the house as a result of his violent behaviour. Two days later Puneet returned to the house but was caged in the garden. The decision to bring back an ejected housemate created an uproar amongst the viewers. Where the viewers vehemently expressed disapproval for this action on social media, Endemol and Viacom received a record of 5700 complaints from all over India contesting barring the show from mainstream network. Housemates from previous seasons were seen encouraging followers to avoid watching the season which later, on proving successful, resulted in loss of a major section of TRPs for the show.

Production manipulation, Interference and Partiality

The introduction of special panel members on occasional eviction episodes came under controversy during the season. The production team was mainly accused for violating the concept of the original Big Brother franchise and allowing interference from external agents into the house environment. The second week saw appearances from Andy and Kamya who were seen forcing their opinions on the housemates by calling it a guide to their stay. However Kamya, on a relative off-note, went on to malign targeted housemates' stance and reputation by wording her take as the 'viewer's point of view'. Subsequent to the episode's airing critics termed her conduct as 'adding script to a rather spontaneous programme'. A similar incident took place in the fourth week where Sargun Mehta's argument with Minissha received much backlash from viewers. Despite demands and complaints from viewers, the broadcaster declined the opportunity to explain the addition. Furthermore Salman Khan was also criticized for siding with Sonali Raut without a hint of care for housemates' or viewers' opinion and judgement citing the live feed as enough proof for evaluation. However viewers expressed disapprobation since the live feed being released on the channel's website was only broadcasting previously recorded content.

Ratings, Reception and Viewership

The premiere of the eighth installment of the series managed to garner mixed to negative reviews from both the critics and the audiences. The line-up of the celebrity housemates was deemed 'mediocre' by Hindustan Times while other newspapers termed the cast as 'monotone and bawdy' castigating the lack of high-profile housemates as 'scraping the barrel'. The press reaction to the house theme and the 'plane crash' concept was also unfavorable. Where the main house was missing the garden area was meant to look like a crash site with the background of a chaotic jungle. This drew immediate negative press for the show since the concept came across as a mockery to the three fatal commercial airline crashes which had occurred, in a one-week span, two months ago. Viewers voiced their opinions on 'microblogging site' Twitter regarding the idea of sleeping in an aircraft seat for the duration of the night as 'uncomfortable to watch'.
