Macao Light Transit System is a railway system in planning to serve the passenger in Macau Peninsula and Taipa island including the Macau International Airport, Macau Special Administrative Region, China. The proposal was brought out to the public by Macau government in October 2006.
Planning
System
The proposed system is similar to the Singapore Light Rapid Transit which is driverless and rubber-tyred light rail system. The track will be partly elevated railroad and partly underground, which would be completely separate from the vehicular infrastructure.
Network
The network would be comprised of:
- Loop Line on the peninsula;
- Macao-Taipa Line might have tracks pass through Ponte de Sai Van (Sai Van Bridge)* to link to service districts, and
- Airport Shuttle Line serves as a branch of Macao-Taipa Line to the Airport.
The total service length of the whole network is expected to be 27 km. The passenger capacity is about 400 of a 4-car train arrangement. The predicted maximum ridership is about 15,400 passengers per hour.
- *Ponte de Sai Van has already reserved the space below the vehicular level for the oncoming railway construction since the bridge commencing.
Cost and time table
The estimated construction cost of the first stage, including 26 stations, is MOP$4.2 billion (about USD$523 million). This is suggested to be fully sponsored by Macau government as a part of the public transport project. The construction time for the first stage of the project may last 42 months. The whole planned network may require 8 years to be completed.
