Acadians article December 2020

Hello, I left a mssg on User talk:174.116.196.132 about cited content that they removed (2x recently), I restored it and I see now that you removed the same content with the comment "junk." Could you explain to me where I've violated the publishing guidelines of Misplaced Pages in making those edits? I carefully researched, analyses, and added citations from reputable historians' work. I am confused about your reasons for removing these edits as "junk." Could you point out what guidelines I violated and why the content failed to meet[REDACTED] editing standards? Or point me to the guidelines that I ought to have followed? I do think the article makes more sense with the content included. Thanks. 174.95.87.187 (talk) 02:47, 25 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi Moxy, I don't think it'd be too hard to add more without it being junk text. Last year I wrote Wildlife of North Macedonia, which doesn't even have marine ecosystems to cover. CMD (talk) 13:51, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
I plan to add to it as times goes by....but not going to rush text for the DYK. I have always wondered why so many DYK's are such bad articles ...I see now it's about a set criteria not about article improvment. Seems like the wrong way to approach how to picking them in my view....but one well.--Moxy 🍁 16:41, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
It's odd no one looks to see the actual work done. Should have content ediotrs evaluating page progress.--Moxy 🍁 16:09, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
Agreed that there's some annoying factors, like unreferenced text explicitly counting towards the initial word count. DYK doesn't capture all progress and creates some odd incentives. The 5x in 7 days rule means if I ever want to take something to DYK, improvements stay around in drafts for a long time. However, I do understand that it's clear bright-line rules to make reviewing easier (and rejecting easier) due to the amount of nominations that reviewers once had to wade through. There used to be 24 hooks per day! At least the addition of new GAs to it provides help with quality, despite it feeling a little redundant. I'm in a similar place with Politics of the Philippines, which when I started was completely unreferenced and almost half the size. CMD (talk) 16:53, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Mobile view of impacts gallery in climate change intro

You deleted the gallery saying "mobile view nightmare and is why this template is not used in articles". I tested this on several devices, and the gallery simply isn't shown on mobile view. Can you provide repro for the mobile view problem?Efbrazil (talk) 21:06, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

When I open the page on iphone, android, chrome, and safari mobile- in none of these situations are the images shown. They are only shown on desktop. Please produce a repro so I can see the actual issue and reproduce the problem and maybe fix it. Efbrazil (talk) 02:26, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Just do right by our readers. ....why even use a format that even you are aware of only works for 40 percent of thoses viewing the page. Put it simply try to make articles accessible to all don't go out of your way to make access to information hard. Still wonder why your using a portal template in main space to begin with.--Moxy 🍁 04:41, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Accessibility has a specific meaning- that the page can be used by the handicapped- and I don't think you mean accessibility that way. Interview request

Hello, Moxy! Thanks so much for agreeing to speak with me, and for the helpful links you've provided. I've posted my questions below; let me know if you need me to clarify any of them. You can respond right here, or send your replies to my email at danielleonard@college.harvard.edu — whichever works best.

1) How long have you been editing Misplaced Pages? And how long have you been an active editor of the “COVID-19 pandemic” Misplaced Pages article?
2) When adding content to the “COVID-19 pandemic” Misplaced Pages article, how do you decide what facts are relevant / notable enough to warrant inclusion?
3) When removing content from the “COVID-19 pandemic” Misplaced Pages article, how do you decide what facts are irrelevant / non-notable enough to warrant deletion?
4) Are there any particular Misplaced Pages policy / guidelines pages that you rely on to guide your editing? (Like “Misplaced Pages:Editing policy,” “Misplaced Pages:Writing better articles,” etc.)
5) Do you feel that Misplaced Pages’s “official” editing guidelines are helpful, or do you generally ignore them? If you prefer forging your own path, do you feel that Misplaced Pages offers you that flexibility?
6) Has adding or deleting content from the “COVID-19 pandemic” Misplaced Pages article ever brought you into conflict with another Wikipedian? If so, how were those disputes resolved?
7) Do you identify more as an inclusionist, a deletionist, or neither / something else?

Thanks again for agreeing to help my research! Feel free to weigh in on anything I didn’t specifically ask in regards to your editing practices. I’m primarily curious to learn about what factors you consider when deciding what content ought to be added / removed from Misplaced Pages articles. Finally, if I do include your responses in my thesis, would you prefer to remain completely anonymous, or can I include your username? I really appreciate it! --Dalorleon (talk) 23:05, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

Acadians article December 2020, follow up message

Hello, so this is the second message I'm posting to you directly to ask why you reverted cited historical sources that I included in an edit. You stated "junk edits" in your reversion summary. Can you explain why my edits were removed or why they violate Misplaced Pages editorial policy? Thanks. 174.95.87.187 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 01:42, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Perhaps best to review modern studies to see what admixture is in the cases of Acadians --Moxy 🍁 02:07, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Huh?

I'm not sure what "agree with AI ....not clue" is supposed to mean. "Drive-by tagging" (with an incorrect page-level template) is probably less useful than just asking – after looking at the material and asking yourself what it is and why it is there? I'm perplexed that you would write "Unclear what this section is about. Why links to random talks and double coslaped sections". The section states very clearly what it is about, and the entries are certainly not "random". It also pretty obviously uses collapsing to avoid a text-wall. People who use that mini-noticeboard on a regular basis are sometimes going want to see what the results of these discussions were (especially since some of them may necessitate edits to MoS in response to an RfC result), but people should not have to wade through all of those. The average watchlister of WT:MOS probably will only care about the currently active discussions, so these are the ones shown. I'm honestly having a hard time seeing what's unclear about: "Style discussions elsewhere – Add a link to new discussions at top of list and indicate what kind of discussion it is (move request, RfC, open discussion, deletion discussion, etc.). Follow the links to participate, if interested. Move to Concluded when decided and summarize conclusion." Did you just get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? ;-)

A more background-y explanation: MoS's talk page has primarily been serving as an MoS noticeboard almost since its inception (indeed, a proposal to create a separate one failed, mainly because this already is one, and people would just end up confused where to post; a similar thing happened with WikiProject India and the India noticeboard, and now the wikiproject's talk page redirects to the noticeboard). But "come see this MoS-related thread at page X" posts tend to gum up the more important uses of this page, which are shaping MoS's wording, and holding RfCs about it and its application when we want to centralize them rather than have them at some article talk page. The simplest solution, which has worked well for several years now, is to stick MoS-related thread notices concisely and neutrally-worded at the top, instead of spawning all-new threads (usually invective-laden) about each one of them and making the MoS talk page 5 times longer than it needs to be. People do still sometimes post separate threads for such discussion notices, but much less than they used to. The capitalization-specific stuff is transcluded separately because it can also be conveniently made to appear at WT:NCCAPS, and because we actually have more proposals, RfCs, etc., about capitalization than any other style matter. WT:MOSCAPS is effectively its own MoS noticeboard. (Not ideal, but it is what it is, and after 20 years it's not going to suddenly change.) WT:MOSBIO has practically been a noticeboard as well lately, but I expect that to die down after a few more RfCs are settled and people stop squabbling repetitively about two particular things (job/office/nobility/religious/honorific titles, and trans people's deadnames). Until then, I or someone else try to make sure that RfCs and other non-trivial proposals from that page get cross-listed at the main MoS talk page, as we do with various other MoS-related threads (generally those that indicate a proposed change to MoS, or change in interpretation of its application).

The main MoS talk page has an order of magnitude more watchlisters that any of the talk pages of the MoS sub-pages. It's one of the most-watchlisted guideline talk pages on the entire system. That matters for WP:CONLEVEL reasons. E.g., the very reason those MOS:BIO disputes keep recurring is insufficient input to ensure that a proper consensus has been reached. It helps to "advertise" RfCs, especially since WP:FRS no longer works as well as it used to (it seems to deliver about 1/10 as many RfC "invites" as it formerly did; I've raised that problem with the current bot operator). On the other hand, most of these things do not rise to the level of needing notices at WP:VPPOL much less being added to WP:CENT; the community tolerance for a firehose of style disputes is low. The practical solution has been to have a kind of "sub-CENT" at the top of the MOS talk page. There might be a better way to technically lay it out, but I think this is the third version (it began as page-bottom list which we keep moving to remain at page bottom, and we also tried a sidebar thing).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  10:24, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Perhaps it should have its own page. It's not clear at all.--Moxy 🍁 16:58, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
No one else seems to be confused by it, and people use it. Not sure what else to tell you. Oh, another reason it's there: The archiver bot at the MoS talk page is quite "aggressive" due to the unusually high volume at that page (for a guideline talk page anyway), so notices that people post (e.g. to the WT:MOSMED RfC today) will be archived away long before the RfC closes, sometimes even before an RM will close. We would thus lose editorial brains giving input in those discussions, for lack of notice about them, if we were not keeping a list of them.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  18:39, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
Its so disordered to be usless..came to the page because at the help desk people were asking what all the links were for ...so yes people have no clue to its value or purpose.....giant wall of text that should be moved to its own location like every other talk page.--Moxy 🍁 18:43, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Why you have changed my corrections about Canadian Provinces?

Hey, I am curious why you have changed back my edits about many cities of Canada? I think it's not true and writing in every article about the provinces that they are part of Canada is actually not informative in general. Tautology IS repeating in every article and it will be difficult for readers to get information immediately because of the sentence: The Canadian province, it just irritating to each extent. I hope that you will answer this message or I will alter it again by removing that sentence. Sincerely, Me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamesmansss (talkcontribs) 15:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Jamesmanss further to my subsequent revert's edit summary, the articles need to connect the city/province to the country somehow for our beyond Canadian readers. If you find it too wordy or cumbersome, propose a different way to explicitly confirm which country the city/province is in. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 18:02, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Implementing deadname RfCs

I am trying to understand your perception that the text to implement these RfCs is being developed too quickly, so I thought I would ask you about it. The RfCs in question were open for more than 60 days, received very wide participation, and had a rather clear result. The current draft text is based very closely on the RfC closes themselves, which were posted more than a week ago. So I have trouble seeing any undue haste here. Could you perhaps explain why you see it differently? Newimpartial (talk) 04:16, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

You risk it all being removed if it's not vented. 2 day talk about the wording may not fly well with many. Biggest addition of text I have seen in a long time. Doing my best so you don't loss it over live edits WP:PROPOSAL.--Moxy 🍁 04:23, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
But the RfCs have already taken place, been widely discussed, and reached a clear result. Are you suggesting that a second RfC will be required for the implementing language? If so, why? Newimpartial (talk) 04:32, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
Don't need an RFC .... others need to be aware that the section is currently being worked on....thus "pls don't revert mass addition...join the ongoing talks as to why there may be many ongoing changes" is the message being sent.--Moxy 🍁 04:38, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi Moxy, just here to see where I went wrong regarding this edit. Chinese form of government

Previously, it was "strongman" as the description of Xi's role in the chinese government. Is that better than "dictator?" Sbelknap (talk) 00:52, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

No need to saying anything about one person in the lead.... nothing has changed it's always been a dictatorship. This change in 2018 did not change the state of the regime, but just formally extended the term on paper.... in reality no change.--Moxy- 00:55, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
No, this is false. This change driven by Xi is a large change. There were term limits, there were aspects of shared governance among senior leaders, and there was greater autonomy of provinces and large cities (for better or worse). Xi changed this. This change is reflected in alterations of the constitution. There were also large increases in repression of political expression, oppression of ethnic and religious minorities, and tighter control of corporations, semi-autonomous regions, and Chinese living abroad. Sbelknap (talk) 01:41, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
Correct....this is why it's covered in the lead as a country characteristic or as civil liberties concern. It's simply a progression as before 2018 this was still a problem..... but recently has led to the additions in the lead about it....Stein Ringen (2016). Please read the lead. Nowhere is there a mention of dictatorship or strongman rule. Yet, this is the de facto form of government in China. Do you agree that the terms dictator or dictatorship or strongman rule would more accurately characterize the nature of the government of China at present? Sbelknap (talk) 02:59, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Template for Canadian statutes

Hi Moxy, something that’s been bugging me for a long time is that the standard template for legislation doesn’t work for Canadian legislation. For example, it uses “enacted by” for “passage by”. The committee field is based on the US practice where committees are to reconcile conflicting versions between the House and Senate and come after passage by the chambers. In Canada, committee stage is generally between 2nd and 3rd reading. The template doesn’t allow for that chronology.

I have zero skills with coding (it was a huge day for me when I figured out how to do tables!), but you seem to know how to do templates.

Would you be interested in collaborating on a new template for Canadian legislation that would work for federal, provincial and territorial laws? Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 16:36, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Sure....where is this?Moxy- 22:51, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
Great! Here's the existing template: https://en.wikipedia.org/Template:Infobox_legislation. There are also templates specifically for UK and US legislation, but neither of them works for Canadian parliamentary stages. I would like to develop one for Canadian federal and provincial laws. Ideally, it would accommodate the fact that Parliament is bicameral, but the provincial assemblies are unicameral. As well, Quebec doesn't use the "First Reading => Second reading => Committee => Third reading" that the other provinces and the Parliament uses. (The pattern is much the same, but the terminology is different.) If I provide the terminology (English version), would you be able to include as a Quebec option? Plus, the territories don't have "Royal Assent" - I beleive it's "Commissioner Assent" or something like that, but I can check. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 00:07, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Sock complaint on your user page

Hello Moxy. Recently you added this link to your user page. User:Charles lindberg is blocked since 2017. Can you say what your concern is? Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 14:00, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

I will have to take a look.....I have not noticed anything....however I have received emails about it (with no evidences).Moxy- 14:10, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for your feedback! This was the first situation I encountered dealing with a Sockmaster in my years as an editor. I may have not had the best approach (due to a lack of policy knowledge) but I did not make those articles any worse. I removed copyedits from the blocked Sockmaster who abused this project by using multiple accounts to push their POV. They were banned indefinitely for a reason. Likewise, their sources were either non-existent or were far from being "encyclopedic". Yet, other editors seem completely unbothered by that. It's shocking to see a Sockmaster (who very well knew what they were doing) receiving more empathy compared to editors who are genuinely here trying their best and learning from mistakes. Do you have any advise or suggestions moving forward? Any constructive tips for me? All the edits made by the Sockmaster have been restored by his usual supporters. Another editor actually left a message on my talk page who believes a much larger sockpuppet network is present, which may involve this banned user at its core. Not sure how best to proceed, if at all? Cheers, Archives908 (talk) 03:39, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

Did just fine in following our rules. Moving forward 2 things....first and fastest is to ask for page protection WP:Page protection....then take your time and follow what is says at WP:HSOCK. Great tool can be found here...Moxy- 03:46, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

Contest a Speedy Deletion

Hi Moxy, It seems that someone is proposing a speedy deletion for article Giovanni Morassutti. Since I don't agree with this proposal, I would like to ask you if, at this stage, any user can leave a message explaining why it should not be deleted or if only the user who originally created the page can contest a Speedy deletion. What would you reccomend in this kind of situations? Thank you --Ibudolor (talk) 14:43, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Tortolì Airport

Thank you for your contributions to the Tortolì Airport article. I am a little concerned about your calling the data "outdated junk". Historical data may still be important for some purposes, we just don't know what purposes people will use it for. Perhaps to learn the history of the airport? Or its potential for the future? The airport management is considering reopening the airport in 2022 for commercial traffic, after a 10-year closure, so those figures could help them make their case. Not that they would learn about then from Misplaced Pages, of course, they would go to the original source.

I am also not sure about the template in the Statistics section encouraging to convert it from a list format to prose. The Statistics section is often a table, even in official publications, such as those used as sources for the data quoted in the article. The table format may seem close to a list format but it is actually quite a popular format in Statistic sections in other articles about airports. Those articles normally don't have a template calling it a list format. For those readers who prefer prose, some of the numbers are actually quoted above, in a sentence in the History section (for 1998 and 2004). If you feel like they belong more to the Statistics section, please feel free to improve the article by relocating the content.

As to updating the section, we did some work yesterday, and found an extra source and updated the available data. Actually, ENAC explicitly states in two of their Annual reports that they didn't get data from Tortolì Airport (for 2 years), which is why it is not included in the article. As to "newly available information", by all means add it, however the airport was closed for 10 years and it is only going to re-open this summer for general aviation if all goes well, so there is no recent data. It might be that after re-opening, the airport itself would find more historical data from their own archives and publish on their website? We will monitor the progress. All the best, Legion23 (talk) 10:13, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

Still outdated junk.....no value to the new airport since its rebuild....very very missleading...looks like the airport is dead. Net negative.--Moxy- 13:06, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

"disruptive editing"

Warning icon Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add inappropriate images, you may be blocked from editing. Moxy- 10:54, 10 May 2021 (UTC)

Moxy all my editing art intended to be constructive. Even when others disagree I try to see their point of view and move on if their point has some validity. For example two out of three agree on validity. At this time, there is no consensus not to include the image, so any further removal without a change in consensus can not be considered disruptive. However, I hardly think all of your Edits are correct all the time. Furthermore I will even go as fair as to say you may be trying to push your views. For now I will live things reverted back as is. Next time, I feel a more coherent point or argument need to be made other then aesthetics. If not I will continue to edit for anybody can edit. You need to prove inappropriate editing and may move to also try to block you from editing or at least discredit you. USA Eagle01 (talk)
Did you review the linked pages? Moxy- 01:45, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
Yes, according to you "most images should be on the right side of the page, which is the default placement". I emphasis the word should. A word use by you and it seem not a must. "Multiple images can be staggered right and left. However, avoid sandwiching text between two images that face each other." Ones more according to you, they can be they don not have to be avoided but its a good idea overall to avoid doing this. Which is a fair idea and if made a good argument on a peer case edit, a very good concept and idea given it will add value to the article instead then only take away from it. This is way I imagen the talk page exist to avoid unnecessary censorship. Maybe its a sine of the times that its time to add more text to the page to fit a new image or that an image may be need, or at the very least consider it. The universe after all is expanding and we are not at the center of it. Given however, your remark had a snarky tone to it. I will say this, I personally don't see much to the argument that it makes it seem cleaner. Especially when value may be lost. This applies to pixel size....and as far as all images should be relevant and emphasize the text of course they need to, but at the same time images should not be excluded because the "don't fit" in the margins. If need be then I suppose a literal spelling of way they fit must be added by having text addressing it with references. By and large when many articles you have personally edit have at the very least multiple images to the left. I am striving to add value to the Misplaced Pages project and will work with others but if others are one-sided I will also strive to make my point. Given at the end its about value.
