Common Dreams NewsCenter, according to its website, is based in Portland, Maine, and was founded in 1997. Common Dreams, according to its website, is a non-profit news service that provides breaking news to the liberal/progressive community. Common Dreams claims on its website that it is funded exclusively by individuals, claims to refuse corporate money, and has no advertising. Common Dreams makes a point of operating with a small staff, and volunteers.

Common Dreams publishes both news stories and editorials. Common Dreams also re-publishes syndicated content from Associated Press, columnists such as Molly Ivins, and news stories from a number of mainstream mass-market newspapers.
