The 2007 Baghdad Crackdown is a series of security operations conducted throughout Baghdad in, how some would put it, a last-ditch attempt to secure Baghdad before Iraq falls into allout civil war. The operation is beaing led by an Iraqi general, general Abboud Gambar, who was a compromise choice, because the first general that the Iraqi priminister offered to head the operation was rejected by the U.S. Army. On the first day of the operation new checkpoints were erected and increased vehicle inspections and foot patrols were reported in some neighborhoods. The operation will be a major neighborhood-to-neighborhood sweep to quell sectarian violence in the city of 6 million. On the first day a U.S. soldier was killed when his security position on the city's edge was attacked with small-arms fire.
