The Battle of Toshkivka (2022) was an armed conflict between the city of Toshkivka, a mountainous municipality in the Sieverodonetsk district of the Luhansk Oblast, as part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Background
Further information: Battle of Popasna, Battle of Sievierodonetsk (2022), and War in DonbasOn 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, in a steep escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which had begun in 2014. The invasion caused Europe's fastest-growing refugee crisis since World War II, with more than 6.5 million Ukrainians fleeing the country and a third of the population displaced. On 8 May, Serhiy Haidai, governor of Luhansk Oblast, said on his Telegram channel that the Russians controlled only half of the city of Popasna, but later admitted Ukrainian forces had pulled out. By 12 May, Russian forces had defeated Ukrainian forces in the Battle of Rubizhne and established full control of the city, furthering their attempts at encircling Sievierodonetsk.
Battle
On May 10, 2022, the head of the Lugansk regional military administration, Sergey Gaiday, reported on the ongoing battles for the settlements of Voevodovka, Toshkivka and Nizhnyaya. Ukrainian air defense units shot down one Orlan-10 drone.
On May 20, 2022, there was a battle between the Russian army and the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Toshkovka region.
On May 23, 2022, the Armed Forces of Ukraine expelled the Russian army from the village of Toshkivka, Luhansk region. The Russian army deployed 25 battalion tactical groups (BTGs) there, each of which had about 500 BTGs, a total of about 12,000.
On June 12, 2022, the Russians tried to break through near Toshkivka as part of the attack on Sieverodonetsk.
On June 13, 2022, Russian forces targeted Ukrainian positions in the area of the settlements of Lysychansk, Sievierodonetsk and Toshkivka.
Fall of Toshkivka
On June 21, 2022, Russian troops captured Toshkivka.
