On 8 July 2022, former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe was shot while making a campaign speech near Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara, Nara Prefecture, at approximately 11:30 Japan Standard Time.
According to The Guardian and various other sources, Abe was making a speech on behalf of a Liberal Democratic Party candidate ahead of the upcoming upper house elections at the time of the shooting. Abe was shot up to three times from behind with a shotgun. He was transported to a local hospital with a chest wound and was reported to have no vital signs at the hospital as of 12:07 JST. Abe is reported to be in an unconscious state and had a cardiac arrest. The presumed assailant, Tetsuya Yamagami (山上徹也, Yamagami Tetsuya), a 42-year-old male from Nara City, was apprehended by Nara Prefectural Police [ja] at 11:42 JST.
