On September 4, 2022, a stabbing spree occurred in at least thirteen locations in the James Smith Cree Nation and in Weldon, Saskatchewan, Canada, killing at least ten people and injuring at least fifteen others.
Two suspects have been connected to the stabbings: 31-year-old Damien Sanderson and 30-year-old Myles Sanderson. As of 21:00 on September 4, 2022, both suspects are wanted and on the run. Alerts relating to the incidents were initially issued to Saskatchewan and later extended to Manitoba and Alberta. Some of the victims were believed to have been targeted, while others were randomly attacked.
Attacks
According to Saskatchewan's Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) commanding officer Rhonda Blackmore, a motive for the stabbings is unclear. The two suspects may have targeted some victims, while others appear to have been attacked randomly. Blackmore said the first attack occurred at 5:40 a.m. local time, with subsequent emergency calls reporting more stabbings.
Deceased and injured victims were found at thirteen locations in the James Smith Cree Nation, an indigenous community with a population of about 3,400, and Weldon, a village with a population of 200. Three medical helicopters and ambulances were dispatched to transport wounded victims to hospitals. Fifteen injured victims were reported, but there may be others who took themselves to hospitals without disclosing the cause of injury.
Suspects
The two suspects wanted in connection to the stabbings were identified as Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles-Brandon Sanderson, 30. They were believed to be driving a black Nissan Rogue and were reportedly seen in Melfort and the Arcola Avenue area of Regina. They are "armed and dangerous" according to the RCMP. It is currently unknown where the suspects may be going, or if they changed vehicles since the last known sighting of them.
Aftermath
In response to the stabbings, the Joints Chiefs and Councils of the James Smith Cree Nation declared a local state of emergency at 12:00 p.m. on the day of the stabbing. The state of emergency will be effective until 5:00 p.m. on September 30. Additionally, the community set up two emergency operation centers.
At 7:12 a.m. CT, the RCMP issued a local dangerous persons alert, advising residents to stay in secure locations and to use caution when allowing others into their homes. It also alerted citizens not to approach the suspects and instead report them to 9-1-1. The alert was later expanded to all of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta.
The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) initiated a code orange, issuing additional staff in hospitals local to the stabbings to help with the influx of patients. This was later declared over, as the influx of new patients had subsided.
The Mosaic Stadium and surrounding areas in Regina will receive additional security from law enforcement to monitor a football game between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers held on the same day.
Reactions
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the stabbings "horrific and heartbreaking". Trudeau went on to state that he was "thinking of those who have lost a loved one and of those who were injured" in a tweet.
