A friendly warning on biographical sourcing

Information icon Hello, I'm Dclemens1971. I noticed that you made an edit concerning content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on Darel Chase (bishop), but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now. Misplaced Pages has a very strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate and clear. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you! Dclemens1971 (talk) 02:17, 28 December 2024 (UTC)

Yes you made a mistake. All the sources formally used were not accurate and did not portray the living person. In fact they violated Misplaced Pages because they were based on conjecture and poorly written pages that had nothing to do with Darel Chase.
In fact it bordered on defamation and inflammatory content which resulted in several major archbishops of the Anglican Continuum deeply concerned at the verifiability that Misplaced Pages offers any person both living or dead.
thank you for being aware of this as I am also an editor of many pages. Thebrooklynphenom (talk) 03:04, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
First of all, I did not add any information to the article at any point so please watch what you are saying. My issue is that you added content that was unverifiable/without sources. Do you have a conflict of interest with this subject? It sounds from your comment like you know or have some affiliation with Chase. If so, please familiarize yourself with WP:COI. Finally, if you believe content is defamatory, please follow the procedures at WP:DEFAMATION. Dclemens1971 (talk) 14:47, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for your clarification. I have sources and there are actually books written also by the subject. I just checked and noticed that you did not start this article. Thebrooklynphenom (talk) 15:05, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
Books by Darel Chase and websites affiliated with him are not reliable sources about him, with limited exceptions such as non controversial facts but not for much of what you are trying to have them support. Dclemens1971 (talk) 16:00, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
That’s nonsense. Thebrooklynphenom (talk) 16:02, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
Other pages with other subjects both alive and deceased have references to their published articles and books that they authored. The same can be done for this subject as well as other subjects. The hypocrisy is astounding to me. Thebrooklynphenom (talk) 16:04, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
It's actually pretty rare for biographies of living people to rely heavily on sources they published themselves, and if you see it, you should generally remove it of find better sources. It's worth quoting WP:BLPSELFPUB in its entirety:
There are living persons who publish material about themselves, such as through press releases or personal websites. Such material may be used as a source only if:
  • it is not unduly self-serving;
  • it does not involve claims about third parties;
  • it does not involve claims about events not directly related to the subject;
  • there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity; and
  • the article is not based primarily on such sources.
The way you last left the article, it was almost entirely on his own writings or on websites of organizations he is affiliated with. It was also highly self-serving, using WP:PEACOCK language that promotes the subject without imparting real information, such as Archbishop D. E. Chase is a prophetic pastor, passionate leader, social activist, church planter, and educator engaged in preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and fighting against racial injustice. Archbishop Chase is also committed to practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice, and economic inequality.... With a unique gift to communicate across generations, Archbishop Chase’s insightful teachings have inspired young and old alike. This is the exact situation in which self-published sources should not be used.
Three more things to add:
  • Your edits seriously janked up the formatting, so I reverted to the last correctly formatted version. Please do not make edits that damage formatting of articles. If you lack experience with formatting Wikitext, please use your WP:SANDBOX to test content before posting it in mainspace.
  • Your accusation in an edit summary of White colonial Eurocentric disrespect for African American clerics. This is a pattern of racism and a byproduct of white-washed persons misportraying the subject is inappropriate and WP:UNCIVIL. Your edit was to add "Archbishop at the beginning of the lead sentence. The article makes very clear that Chase is an archbishop. There is no racism or "Eurocentric disrespect" in this. It is simply complying with MOS:FIRSTBIO, which calls for the sentence to begin with the subject's name, not with titles or styles. Titles can follow immediately if the subject is notable for holding. There is no racism in this treatment; see the examples here for white archbishops: Charles J. Chaput, Justin Welby, Linda Nicholls, etc. Please don't throw around this kind of accusation as it makes civil discourse difficult.
  • You have not replied to my question above about whether you have some kind of personal affiliation with Chase or his organization(s). Your edits indicate a conflict of interest, and if you have one, you need to declare it. Thanks. Dclemens1971 (talk) 22:54, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
And im
going to revert everything you just did and get others to do the same. You know exactly what your kind is doing and you’re going to see very soon the end result of your racist antics Thebrooklynphenom (talk) 23:02, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
Also, what other account are you using to edit on Misplaced Pages? This account has edited only three pages according to your history, but you say you’ve edited many. Dclemens1971 (talk) 14:49, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
