Organized by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), the tournament is scheduled to take place in Ecuador from July 12 to August 2, 2025.
Format
The tournament will feature 10 teams, divided into two groups of five for the initial phase. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Final Phase. The group-stage format is as follows:
Group A: Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Peru.
Group B: Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Venezuela, and Bolivia.
In the Final Phase:
The third-place teams from each group will face each other to determine the fifth position.
The first-place team from Group A will face the second-place team from Group B, and the first-place team from Group B will face the second-place team from Group A in the semifinals.
The winners of the semifinals will compete in the final, while the losing teams will play in the third-place match.
Qualification
The tournament will serve as a qualification pathway for the following competitions:
2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles: The two finalists will secure spots.
2027 Pan American Games in Lima: Teams finishing third to fifth will qualify. Since Peru is already qualified as the host nation, if Peru finishes in one of these spots, the sixth-place team will also qualify.
It should be noted that starting with this cycle, the Copa América Femenina no longer offers direct qualification to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Instead, a separate South American Women’s Qualifiers competition will be held, beginning in late 2025 after the conclusion of the continental tournament.
Significance
The 2025 Copa América Femenina marks a critical step in the development of women’s football in South America, serving both as a regional championship and as a gateway to international competitions. With its new qualification structure, it underscores CONMEBOL’s commitment to enhancing the competitiveness of women’s football in the region.
