EMERALD2 Project logo

The Project EMERALD2 was a pilot project of the EC Programme Leonardo, which developed the first e-learning materials in medical physics (1995-1998). EMERALD is an acronym of European Medical Radiation Learning Development.

Details

The project included as partners universities and hospitals from the UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal, headed by specialists from King’s College London. The project developed the first structured training in physics of diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy. The project developed also the first educational image databases (IDB) in medical physics, engraved on 3 CD-ROMs and published in 1998.

The CD-ROMs were published with an ISBN identification as printed books. These are among the first in the world image databases CD-ROMs with ISBN:

  • EMERALD Image Database, Training Courses in Medical Radiation Physics CD-ROM, published 19 February 1998, King’s College London, ISBN 1870722035

The continuation of project EMERALD (EMERALD II, 1998-2001) developed the first educational website of medical physics in 1999 and launched it in 2000 (emerald2.eu).

The third project in the series (EMIT, 2001-2003) updated EMERALD materials adding physics of magnetic resonance and ultrasound imaging. The updated educational IDB with over 3000 images was available both as CD-ROMs with ISBN and on the emerald2.eu website, which attracted thousands of users worldwide.

In 2004 EC awarded the projects its inaugural Award for vocation education – the Leonardo da Vinci Award.
