Prasanna Ernest is the Mayor of the Kollam Municipal Corporation.
Early Life
Prasanna Ernest was born in 1964 to T. P. Varghese and Mary Varghese at Kuttivattom Puthen Kalikkal House in Chavara, Kollam district. She has one brother (Prakash P. V.). In 1987, she earned a degree in Economics from Fatima Mata National College, Kollam.
Her husband, X. Ernest, is a member of the CPI(M) Kollam District Secretariat.
Public Life
Prasanna entered public life through student politics. She was an office-bearer of the SFI and the All India Democratic Women's Association. She served as the Vice Chairperson of the Fatima Mata College Union and worked as a Literacy Instructor from 1987 to 1991. She was a prominent organizer of SFI in Kollam and served as a District Committee member of the organization. In 1991, she became the Chavara Area President of the All India Democratic Women's Association. After her marriage, her activities shifted to Kollam. She was the Area Secretary of the Women's Association in Kollam for three terms.
Prasanna served as a councilor in the Kollam Municipal Corporation for three terms. In 2000, she was elected from the Pattathanam Division in Kollam Corporation's first council. In 2005, she was elected from the Mundakkal Division. She chaired the Tax Appeal Committee for five years and the Health Education Standing Committee for another five years. In her third term, she was elected from the Thamarakulam Division and became the Mayor of Kollam Corporation in 2010. She was also a state-level faculty member at the Manaveeyam Center for Women's Studies.
Between 2000 and 2011, she served as the Secretary of the District Child Welfare Committee and was a Standing Committee member of the Kerala State Child Welfare Committee from 2001 to 2004. She was a board member of N. S. Memorial Institute of Medical Sciences and the Mundakkal Service Cooperative Bank. She is currently a member of the CPI(M) Kollam District Committee and serves as the District Secretary and State Executive Member of the Democratic Women's Association.
