SRSG Stewart has taken over from Elizabeth Spehar, who completed her term on November 30, 2021.
With over 28 years of experience in peace, security, and international relations, Mr. Stewart has a proven track record in leadership and management. Most recently, he served as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) from 2017 to 2021.
His previous roles include Deputy Head and Chief of Staff at the United Nations Office to the African Union in Addis Ababa, as well as positions in multiple UN field missions. Notably, he served as Acting Chief of Staff and Chief of Political Affairs for the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) between 2007 and 2009. Earlier in his career, he worked as a Canadian diplomat from 1990 to 1997.
A graduate of Laval University in Canada, Mr. Stewart is proficient in both English and French.
