In order to recapture the territories that Mawdud's father had been forced to cede to the Seljuks and to restore the glory of the Ghaznavid state, he launched an expedition against the Seljuks in 1042, briefly occupying Balkh and Herat, and in 1043/4 Mawdud invaded Tukharistan but was repelled by the Seljuk prince Alp Arslan. Mawdud also sent troops to Sistan to enforce his authority over the ruler of the region, the Nasrid Abu'l-Fadl Nasr. However, these actions were unsuccessful and Sistan soon became a Seljuk vassal state, and thus the Ghaznavid borders were limited to Bost.
