Threefold Recital received "generally favorable" from critics, according to review aggregator Metacritic. The Sixth Axis gave the game an 8, admiring that it "provides a good philosophical journey about life", but chastises that "some chapters can drag".
Will Silberman of Digital Chumps scored it a 7, complimenting that the game "does an excellent job in telling a thoughtful tale of beastlings bound to Daoist philosophy", but castigates the "simplicity of the platforming". Noisy Pixel rated the game a 7.5 out of 10, stating that it "masterfully combines a rich Eastern-inspired aesthetic with innovative gameplay and heartfelt storytelling" whilst criticizing that "some characters are under-explored by the end of the game" and "some missions are missable by the end of a chapter."
VICE's Shaun Cichacki gave Threefold Recital a "Recommended" rating, praising "the high-quality art, cutesy style and plenty of tough but necessary conversations", but feels that "some of the translation feels a little stiff and off".
