- Antiochus IV Epiphanes decrees that Hellenistic practices be followed by all of his subjects. This decree causes Judas Maccabeus, one of the five sons of Mattathias, to continue his father's revolt, started the previous year in Modi'in. Mattathias is considered the founder of the Hasmonean dynasty. With only one exception all manuscripts of I Maccabees are in agreement that the "abomination of desolation" occurred on 6 December 167 BCE.
