Revision as of 14:09, 4 June 2005 by 24.130.117.205 (talk)(diff) ← Previous revision | Latest revision (diff) | Newer revision → (diff)Negroid describes the racial classification of humans from sub-Saharan Africa and was one of the four major races as recognized by nineteenth century racial theories.
Physical anthropology is based solely on skull shapes (craniometry), and usually does not take into account other characteristics such as pigmentation or hair texture. This allowed some anthropologists (f.e S.Coon) to identify some intermediate groups as Caucasoid, even though they exhibit stronger negroid traits in cranio-morphology and outside physical appearance (such as the Rana Tharu of Nepal).
It is important to note that anthropological racial classification is not based on solely on skull shapes as Coon himself indicated "The Badarian type represents a small branch of the Mediterranean racial group. ... The Badarian skulls are more prognathous than those of their successors, and have higher nasal indices. ... In fact, while the prognathism and nose form would suggest a negroid tendency, this cannot be established, since the hair form is definitely not negroid." Coon - The races of Europe.
The Hamitic peoples of Eastern Africa who inhabit much drier, arid regions than their shorter-nosed, tropical inhabitant counterparts to their west and southwest. (such as the Somalians, Ethiopians, Afar, Sudanese, etc.) seem to fit the Badarian ideal-type. With quite hairy bodies and high nasal ridges, they have also been cultural exposed to the Arabs and the greater Islamic culture.
