National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Neuroscience Center at St. Elizabeths Hospital. He is an active advisor and advocate for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI). Dr. Torreyโs sister has schizophrenia.
Dr. Torrey is the subject of some controversy. He is opposed by the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS); Thomas Szasz, a libertarian psychiatrist who asserts that mental illness did not exist; British psychiatrist Ronald Laing who believes that schizophrenia is really a growth experience and Paul Krassner editor of The Realist.
