Ronet was born in Nice, Alpes Maritimes, the son of professional actors. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire where Jean-Louis Barrault was one of his mentors. He made his fim debut in Rendez-vous de juillet (1949) and then went on to act in many French, Spanish and Italian films in the 1950s, 60s and 70's notably Elevator to the Gallows (1957), Plein Soleil (1960), La Dénonciation (1962), The Fire Within (1963), The Champagne Murders (La Scandale, 1967), La Femme infidèle (1968), and La Piscine (1969). He worked multiple times with directors Claude Chabrol and Louis Malle and with actors Alain Delon and Jean Seberg. He directed two films -Le Voleur de Tibidabo (1964) with Anna Karina and Bartleby (1976). He wrote 2 books : "L'ile des dragons" (1973) et "Le métier de comédien" (1977).
He was married to Maria Pacôme (b. July 18, 1923 in Paris) from 1950 until 1956 (divorce), and lived with Josephine Chaplin, daughter of Charles Chaplin, from 1977 until his death, by whom he had a son Julien (b. 1980).
He died in Paris of cancer.
