Reaching a treaty agreement with the French king Charles the Simple, Hrolf Ganger pledged feudal allegiance to the king and took the French name of Rollo. In return he was granted many of the northern French lands under the title of Duke of Normandy. His followers and descendants were known as Norman.
He was a direct ancestor of king William I of England.
