Dikshit (or Dixit) is an Indian surname.

The surname is usually associated with certain people from the Brahmin community among Hindus in India. People with this surname have their roots in the Indian states of Kashmir, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and some parts of South India but not in the Eastern part of India.

It is believed that some people who arrived in India with the army of Alexander the Great, were imparted the knowledge of Vedas and Hindu Philosophy and these people are said to have taken on the surname of Dikshit - derived from Diksha (Sanskrit for imparting of knowledge).
