She began to sing at the age of 8, participating in various children's festivals. In 1989, at age 12, she won the Grand Night of Fado. That year she represented Portugal in the Festival of UNICEF, Danny Kaye Award, in the Netherlands where she was in second place and won the prize for Best Interpreter.
