Online classified advertising is a form of classified advertising that utilises the accessibility and resources of the internet to allow people to buy, sell or find items on a local, national or global level.

Type

Online classified ads websites either focus on specific segments of the market, for instance property or automobile sales, or provide facilities for the sale of a number of different types of item that are categorised.

Location

The very nature of the internet allows people to communicate over vast distances instantaneously. This power of communication has allowed websites such as eBay and Gumtree to bring buyers and sellers together on a global level. In more recent years classified ads websites have targeted national and local audiences in an effort to become more specialised. National level classified ads websites such as Craigslist in the US and Adtrader and PoundAd in the UK, utilise the power of location searches to bring more localised classified ads to users. Local level classified ads websites such as Hallo London bring areas specific online classified ads which represent the closest relation to more traditional newspaper classified ads.

Development

The costs and limitations associated with traditional newspaper classified ads has lead to a large shift in market share towards online classified ads in recent years. The ability to include greater content, specific search criteria without any print charges incurred makes the online classified ads market a very appealing option to the consumer. In all liklihood the online classified ad market will continue to grow and without any one particular website taking a stranglehold on users, the market looks set to remain fragmented for some time to come.
