The product is a hamburger, consisting of a quarter-pound fire-grilled beef patty, sesame seed bun, lettuce, sliced onion and tomato, ketchup, mayonnaise, and pickles. Cheese and bacon may be added, and double patty, chicken, and Jr. varieties are also available. Different varieties have appeared throughout the years for a limited time. The Chicken Whopper, a grilled chicken sandwich, is apparently being rebranded as the TENDERGRILL (the capitalization is intentional), although many locations have yet to adopt the new name.
The Whopper was created in 1957 by Burger King founders James McLamore and David Edgerton and sold for 37 cents; nowadays, the cost of a Whopper (in the USA) ranges from 99 cents (during promotions) to 2.00 USD and higher. For example, in Vancouver, Washington, a Whopper costs 2.00 USD, while Double and Chicken Whoppers cost 3.00 USD, and the Jr. costs 1.00 USD. Cheese may be added for an additional 40 cents. Burger King sells about 1.7 billion Whoppers each year.
It currently comes in the following variety:
- Original Whopper
- Original Whopper with cheese
- Double Whopper
- Double Whopper with cheese
- Triple Whopper
- Triple Whopper with cheese
- Whopper, Jr.
- Whopper, Jr. with cheese
