Greeks form an ethnic minority in the Republic of Macedonia and official figures from the most recent census (2002) cite 422 individuals of Greek descent. They are mostly people settled in Yugoslavian Macedonia togheter with many ethnic Macedonians from Greek part of Macedonia after Greek Civil War as political refuges and their descendants.

The controversy surrounding a Greek minority within the Republic of Macedonia stems from the statistical treatment of Aromanian (Vlach) population groups, who in their majority have historically identified themselves as Greeks. (see Aromanians in Greece)
