A Nineties kid (alternatively as '90s kid) is a term used to describe a minor subculture within Generation Y of individuals who were children or teenagers during the 1990s. Such members may be nostalgic for the decade and are noted for, or even distinguished by, fashion trends of the '90s such as wearing flannel or a backward cap. Many online forums and websites devoted to 1990s nostalgia developed as a result of the trend.
Culturally, many '90s kids do not have memories of the Cold War and grew up with much of the pop culture associated with the mid-to-late 1990s, but some can recall events as early as the Gulf War and the death of Kurt Cobain. Classic Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network shows such as those on SNICK and early Toonami, however, have had an enormous impact on individuals within the Nineties kid demographic.
Nineties kids tended to be exposed to alternative rock during their youth, and in many cases this has led to their preference of alternative rock, classic rock, and grunge music over rap or hip hop. Bands like Blink 182 and the other pop punk bands are arguably a major influence on the later nineties kids, which may have led to them being characterised as immature.
Many "1990s kids" may continue to play video games from the period, either through the original consoles or through emulation. They may also continue to use handheld consoles like the original Gameboy, which although introduced in 1989, continued to sell well into the 1990s.
