Matthew J. Amorello (March 15, 1958–) is the former chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority who presided over the Big Dig from 2002-2006. He was appointed by acting Govenor Jane Swift to stabilize the project. During Amorello's term the budget of the Project was stabilized and the schedule was restored. Amorello opened major portions of the project to traffic. He opened the Zakim Bridge the widest cable stay bridge in the world. Singer Bruce Sprngsteen sang. Chairman Amorello saw major roadway openings along with several parks and open space. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy. The Greenway is a public private effort to maintaine public lands created by the "Big Dig" project,.

Work history
Appointed commissioner of the Massachusetts Highway Department in 1999 by Gov. Paul Cellucci. Served as state senator from Worcester, 1991-1998. Appointed chairman of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority by acting Gov. Jane Swift in February 2002. While in the Senate Amorello served on the Senate Ways and Means Committee and the Senaate Committee on Science and Technology. Amorello was elected to the position of Minority Whipin 1995, and caucus Chairman for the GOP. Ranking minority member of the Joint Committee on Transportation.
