The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP), formerly known as the Mississippi Game & Fish Commission, is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of Mississippi responsible for programs protecting Mississippi fish and wildlife resources and their habitats, as well as administering all state parks. The agency issues hunting and fishing licenses, advises on habitat protection, and sponsors public education programs. It is also responsible for enforcement of Mississippi's fish and game laws. It is separate from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, which is the governing body for the state's natural salt-water resources and law enforcement thereof (ie: Gulf of Mexico, ocean-going vessels, etc.).

Leadership

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is composed of five persons, known as the Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, appointed by the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate, for a term of five years. One person is appointed from each congressional district and one person appointed from the state at-large.

The commission elects from its membership a chairman who presides over meetings and a vice-chairman who presides in the absence of the chairman or when the chairman is excused.

The commission adopts, amends and repeals regulations, ordinances and rules as may be necessary for the operation of the department. The commission also carries out other duties, responsibilities and powers as they are prescribed by law.

Mission

The department operates six programs in carrying out its mission:

• The Parks and Recreation Program provides safe, family-oriented recreational opportunities in scenic areas, specifically at all state parks.

• The Freshwater Fisheries Management Program manages Mississippi’s fisheries resources.

• The Wildlife Management Program manages Mississippi’s wildlife resources.

• The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science Program increases knowledge of the natural sciences, particularly in the area of conservation of Mississippi’s wildlife and fisheries resources.

• The Law Enforcement Program protects Mississippi’s natural resources by enforcing statutes and regulations pertaining to freshwater fisheries, wildlife, hunting and boating safety.

• The Support Services Program provides the ancillary business functions as required by state law and department policy.
