I Am… Sasha Fierce is the third studio album by American R&B and pop singer Beyoncé, released November 8, 2008 on Columbia Records in the United States. It was first issued in Japan on November 8 and later worldwide throughout November and December 2008. The double album introduces her alter-ego "Sasha Fierce".
I Am... Sasha Fierce reached the top ten on thirty-two charts worldwide and generated a deluxe edition, a remix album with videography, a platinum edition, and a re-release to celebrate 1 year since the album's original release. It also spawned five successful worldwide singles and three US-only singles. Upon its release, the album received favorable reviews from most music critics.
Background and concept
Initial press reports of the album gave its tentative title as Worldwide. She revealed that she had co-written and co-produced over seventy songs. In a statement released on Knowles' official website, she wrote:
I am in a different place right now and I wanted people to see the many sides of me. The music is upbeat for the dance, fun side and it is reflective, passionate and serious for the personal side. I have taken risks here. I am not afraid and my music will explain it all. There is no label or tag on my sound. It's me and I am so excited to share it with the world on November 18.
— Beyoncé Knowles
Knowles' father-manager, Mathew, explained the two-disc album, saying, "Beyoncé was adamant—and she has complete creative control—about dividing her songs. She felt she couldn't mix the songs together. She's in a much different space now than she was one year ago. She's married and in a really good place and this album reflects that.". Sessions with producers Danja and The Neptunes were also said to take place, but their records did not make the final cut.
Sasha Fierce
The album formally introduces Knowles' alter-ego Sasha Fierce. Knowles said that Sasha was "born" during the making of her 2003 hit single "Crazy in Love." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly magazine, Knowles noted that her alter-ego is "strictly for the stage." The magazine has described it as "the singer's sensual, aggressive alter ego."
Sasha Fierce first appeared in the video for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" with her signature "Roboglove". Knowles later wore it on the red carpet during the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, when she performed on Saturday Night Live, on the cover of Gotham magazine, in the music video for "Diva", and when she performed "Single Ladies" at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
Music
In a Billboard magazine interview, Knowles described the two sides of the album: "... One side has songs that are more mainstream and another has my more traditional R&B songs for my fans who've been there the whole time. Some of it sounds like Barbra Streisand, Karen Carpenter and the Beatles around the 1970s." Knowles explained on The Oprah Winfrey Show that the difference between I Am... Sasha Fierce and Knowles' earlier solo albums is that it includes more ballads. The second disc, Sasha Fierce features 80's synthpop, electropop, and electro displayed in songs like "Radio", "Diva", "Sweet Dreams", "Scared of Lonely", and "Video Phone". "Smash into You" was included during the closing credits of the 2009 motion picture Obsessed, a film which the Knowles had a lead role. Originally recorded by Jon McLaughlin in the form of "Smack into You", it was never officially release by either artist. The-Dream had re-produced the song using different instruments Beyoncé is credited as a writer for the song as she decided to change "Smack" into "Smash" during the chorus and hook.
Additionally with the album's release "Ave Maria" charted at number 150 in the UK due to digital sales. The song was also performed live during the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree on December 3, 2008. On June 28, 2009, the song was sung live as a tribute to Michael Jackson at the BET Awards, where she performed part of the song in Latin in a identical way she performs the song on her I Am… Tour. The song "Halo" was originally offered to British singer Leona Lewis, but when Lewis didn't find time in her schedule to record the song, Ryan Tedder gave it to Beyoncé. *"Radio" was released in the Netherlands instead of "Broken-Hearted Girl", where it then debuted on the Dutch Top 40. It was also used in different Dutch television commercials to promote local radio stations.
Release and promotion
The first two singles "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" were premiered on October 8, 2008 to selected US radio stations.
The deluxe edition of the album, was released simultaneously with the standard version. Mathew Knowles held a listening party for the album in New York on October 22, 2008. Prior to the album's release date, the entire album was premiered on November 11, 2008 through Knowles' MySpace account. To correspond with the double album release, Columbia Records created a teaser website for Sasha Fierce.
Then on June 16, 2009, Above and Beyoncé - Video Collection & Dance Mixes was released. This CD/DVD release included dance remixes to the singles of the album (as well as the "Ego" remix with rapper Kanye West) and the videos previously released for these singles. Finally the platinum edition of I Am... Sasha Fierce was released in select countries in November 2009, featuring a CD and DVD. The deluxe edition of the album will be re-released in the United States, on November 24, 2009 including all of the previously released songs plus a new song "Poison" and remix of "Video Phone" with Lady Gaga.

Reception
Commercial performance
I Am…Sasha Fierce first debuted at number 5 on Japan's Oricon international chart and subsequently moved to the top spot on the chart, becoming Knowles' third number one album in that country. The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling 482,000 units in its first week, giving Knowles her third consecutive number 1 album in the US and received a double platinum certification by the RIAA. According to Billboard it was the 10th best selling album of 2008.
In the UK, the album debuted at number ten, becoming Knowles' lowest-debuting album despite having higher first week sales than her previous album B'Day. Following Knowles' performance at the 2008 The X Factor finale with winner Alexandra Burke, the album moved up to number nine. Due to the success of its singles in the UK in its 39th week on the chart (August 16) it rose from 5 to its highest peak of number 2. On November 18th 2009, exactly a year after the albums worldwide release it was announced on the singers official Bebo page that the album has had sales of over one Million in the UK. In Ireland, I Am... Sasha Fierce debuted at number three, making it Knowles second top three album in the country. After the success of the lead singles "If I Were A Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and announcement of the tour the album went on to top the Irish charts giving Knowles her second Irish number 1 album.
In Australia, I Am... Sasha Fierce debuted at number nine and peaked at number eight however following the success of singles "Sweet Dreams" and "Broken-Hearted Girl" the album rebounded to a new peak of three in late September 2009. In New Zealand the album debuted at number sixteen before popularity of its singles pushed the album up to a new peak of six. The album was certified Platinum after twenty-three weeks on the chart, shipping over 15,000 copies to retailers.
Critical response
According to review aggregator Metacritic, the album has received mainly positive reviews, scoring 62 out of 100 points based on 22 reviews. Mariel Concepcion of Billboard magazine writes, "Beyoncé devoted half of the tracks on this double-disc set to her feisty alter ego Sasha Fierce ... But, it's the classic, more timeless R&B songs on the portion of the album that seem like a much-welcomed stretch for the singer." Comparing the songs on the "Sasha Fierce" disc to B'Day, "less fun, less impulsive, and yes, less fierce", said Allmusic. Vibe magazine's Amy Linden ponders on the album's double-sided personality, favoring Knowles over her alter-ego: "Ironically, it's the more tame (and nameless) persona that's the most intriguing, commanding and sexual. ... Beyonce sounds relaxed, confident and, if for no other reason than the fact that you can't hear her trying, hits the mark. Maybe someone should let her therapist and label know that letting Sasha shine too bright dims Beyoncé's light".
Christian Hoard of Rolling Stone magazine noted the slow songs in the album as having "thoroughly memorable tunes", although he dismissed its lyrics, claiming they are "full of bland self-affirmation and saggy lines". However, Hoard commended Knowles for her presentation of her alter ego, writing "But the 'Sasha' disc boasts Beyoncé's most adventurous music yet ... Another plus: The girl who blew up going all melismatic has never sung with more restraint than she does on Sasha." Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly gave the album a B+ rating and said the album offers "two compelling sides" of Knowles, describing the first disc as "romantic, vulnerable, soft" and the other as "aggressive, sexual, and, well, fierce". She adds, "The collection might have been better served had she edited it down to one disc, rather than belabor what ultimately seems like a marketing gimmick. And while fans will surely speculate, there's little in the lyrics that feels more revealing than previous emotional fire-starters such as 2006's "Ring the Alarm". I Am…Sasha Fierce was ranked number two on Entertainment Weekly list of the 10 Best Albums of 2008. It also won a 2009 Soul Train Award for Best Album.
Track listing
The deluxe edition on iTunes contains the videos for "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)". On iTunes Spain, the album came with a bonus track, "Si Yo Fuera un Chico" (the Spanish version of "If I Were a Boy"). At Wal-Mart, both digital versions, and at least some copies of both physical versions, included MP3 recordings of "Déjà Vu", "Me, Myself and I", "Irreplaceable", and "At Last" made for the retailer's "Soundcheck" series.
