Their main profession is agriculture. Vokkalathana in Kannada means "tilling land" and Vokkaliga means "one who tills land". Today the Vokkaliga community embraces within its fold the Morasu Vokkaligas, the Gangadicara Vokkaligas, Reddy Vokkaligas, Kunchitiga Vokkaligas, Hallikaru Vokkaligas and so on. Great Kannada poet Kuvempu is from Vokkaliga comminty, who advacated Viswamaanava concept in is writting. Some famous Vokkaligas are Kengal Hanumathaiah,H.D. Deve Gowda, S.M. Krishna.
