It was named for the ship HMS Carcass, which surveyed the island in 1766.
The island has no rats, and as a result has a wide variety of birdlife including night herons, as well as seals and penguins. It is currently run as a sheep farm. Its small settlement is also known for its gardens, and has a small shop.
The island is known as Isla del Rosario in Spanish.
