In High School he helped his team, the Poplar Bluff Mules, to back to back Missouri state championships in MSHSAA Class 5 for the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 seasons. The highly recruited Hansbrough turned down scholarship offers from Duke, Kansas and Kentucky to attend North Carolina.
UNC lists Hansbrough as standing 6'9" and weighing 235 pounds. Nicknamed "Psycho T" by his teammates, UNC fans know Hansbrough for his aggressive and enthusiastic play.
His team went to the state tournament each of his three years in high school, and he was named to the All-State team twice. Hansbrough averaged 28.2 points and 13.4 rebounds a game as a high school senior.
