    Page ratings suggestion

I would like to make the suggestion that the page ratings of the articles appear at the top of the page rather than at the bottom where they might not be seen. I feel that this is very useful information to have readily available. People read these articles assuming that the information included is valid and reliable. It isn't always, and that is usually reflected in the ratings responses the article has been given. Being aware of the page ratings might provide the reader a useful context for regarding the information they are receiving on a topic.

If this is not the place to propose this, I would like information as to what would be.

    Thank you.

    Martimac6823 (talk) 01:23, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Martimac. The place to suggest this is Misplaced Pages:Village pump (proposals). FWIW, I hope they get rid of the rating survey entirely soon, and would find it massively obtrusive if placed at the top of the page.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:32, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

    My Page

My page keeps getting deleted. It is titled: Eggertsville Hose Company . We are a volunteer fire company.I am the Fire Chief.

Please advise! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Buttinoj (talkcontribs) 06:35, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages does not aim to have an article on every subject, only on those that people have already found to be notable. An article on this company would have to include references to books, newspapers and such like to show that people have found it worthwhile to write about it. You will find more on this at Misplaced Pages:Notability and especially Misplaced Pages:Notability (organizations and companies).
In addition, Misplaced Pages articles about organisations are not normally written by members of those organisations. Instead, they are written by volunteer editors working from the published materials. You will find more on this at Misplaced Pages:Conflict of interest.
You may find it helpful to look through the FAQ page Misplaced Pages:FAQ/Organizations. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:05, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

    Citation parameters

    Transferred from Misplaced Pages:Reference desk/Language:

Greetings. I'm participating in the Guild of Copyeditor's Backlog Elimination Drive for September, and I found an article tagged for copyediting; the specific problem that wants copyediting is "invalid citation parameters". I probably should know this, having been adding references to articles for years now, but I'm afraid I don't know what precisely citation parameters are. I'd like to fix the problem, but I need to understand this first. Thanks in advance! Wilhelmina Will (talk) 06:45, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

This would be something like a {{cite web}} with unsupported or misspelled parameters. It can be hard to spot this kind of error by eye, but the AWB tool highlights them in any article it processes. I've just searched for the phrase "invalid citation parameters" and have used AWB to find and fix the errors in 2010 Monterey Sports Car Championships and Barazoku. Are those the articles you were working on? -- John of Reading (talk) 07:54, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
First one yes, second one no. But this information will really help in future; for a long time I only knew how to copyedit by fixing grammar/punctuation/tone and the like. Thank you, very much! :) Wilhelmina Will (talk) 19:21, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Why do my edits to sandboxes (to practice reference with links and citations) disappear when I click save?

Why do my edits to sandboxes (to practice reference with links and citations) disappear when I click save? Even after I enter anti spam letters, the text i placed on the sand box just disappear. Is it because it's too much text with too many links? But how do I practice? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gettingthere (talkcontribs) 13:51, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

What edits are you referring to? The only edit you have to a page named sandbox is to User:Gettingthere/sandbox and I don't see any references there. Did you perhaps click Show preview instead of Save page? Also, what type of references did you try to create? Where these inline citations with ref tags? If this is the case, then you need to put {{Reflist}} somewhere on the page (usually at the bottom in a section called References). Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:04, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I only see one edit to that you've made to your sandbox. You can see a list of all your contributions here. Be sure that you click on "save page" and not "show preview" when you edit. TNXMan 14:17, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
And if you have to enter anti spam letters then also click Save page after that. Do you get a message? Misplaced Pages can handle quite large edits but you could try something simple like saving the link http://google.com. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:28, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
In accordance with what PrimeHunter said, I believe you have to click Save two times for the edit to appear. In particular you have to do the following:
    1. click save
    2. enter anti spam letters
    3. click save a second time
Does it work if you do this? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:48, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes that really helped. Now my edits on User:Gettingthere/sandbox do appear. But some text go out of the margin of page and appear boxed in. Why is this?Gettingthere (talk) 17:13, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Wow, Eureka I solved that. When I start text after leaving a space from the left margin, the text goes out of the right margin.Gettingthere (talk) 17:41, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Ah yes, those grey text boxes in case of leading spaces are confounding many new users, and the cause of many posts here. Glad to see you worked out your problems. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:56, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

    Doppelganger accounts

I remember to have read somewhere that the software does not allow the creation of an account under a username that is too similar to an existing account. Do I remember correctly? If this is the case, what accounts similar to existing ones can be created? For example, lets say account A B is registered by a user. Is it possible for another user to create the account AB? What kind of similarity do two usernames have to show in order for the second one not to be allowed to be created by the software? Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 15:27, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

See WP:IMPERSONATOR. I don't know the exact conditions. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:43, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
If you are interested in the technical details, mw:Extension:AntiSpoof has some. For example, you can see which characters are converted to which characters for the purposes of AntiSpoof at mw:Extension:AntiSpoof/Equivalence sets. Regards SoWhy 15:47, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I tried to create the account ToshioYamaguchi as a doppelganger account, but it says it is too similar to this account, so a single space doesn't seem to be a great enough difference. Thus another person will also be unable to create that account. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 16:06, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

    Unknown value, self-serving content

I don't even know how to start searching the FAQ. I stumbled across a Misplaced Pages page (Internet Chat Relay Services) which stated at the top "AKill" redirects here. For the creator of Akbot, see Owen Walker.". So what? Links point to Akbot and Owen Walker. Is this cheap publicity for the creator of a virus?

Any value for the average user? Not that I can see.

What to do about it? Don't know. I didn't see any markup terms like "Citation Needed" but I'd like to see Misplaced Pages users weed out factual data that has no value.

Hello and welcome to the Misplaced Pages help desk. The message ""AKill" redirects here. For the creator of Akbot, see Owen Walker." that appears on Internet Relay Chat services is called a hatnote. We use these when a title can have two different meanings. The most common meaning is used, and a note is added to the top of the page in case readers were looking for the other meaning(s). Alpha Quadrant 16:03, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I expanded the hatnote for the sake of clarity. – ukexpat (talk) 16:58, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
AKill is a concept mentioned in Internet Relay Chat services#OperServ. The idea is that a user may have entered Akill in the search box and been redirected to Internet Relay Chat services while they actually wanted information about Owen Walker. We don't have the technical ability to only show the redirect message when somebody came to the article via a search on Akill. It also occurs that another article links to the wrong target. An article mentioning the hacker by his pseudonym might incorrectly link to Akill, and users clicking the link would be confused. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:15, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Difficulty getting video/audio references on article to show both the 'work' (eg name of newspaper) and the publisher

Hi there, I hope this is the right place to ask this question, I have a problem with some references and it's driving me mad trying to fix them!

On The Human Centipede (First Sequence) footnotes number 3, 8, 11, 16, 39, 57 and 92 are all a video or audio reference, where a link is given to an online video or audio interview with an "event occurs" time given.

Now, every single reference on this article has a 'work' and a 'publisher', for example: "(18) David Cox (19 Aug 2010). "The Human Centipede director shows why three into one will go". The Guardian. Guardian Media Group. Retrieved 15 Aug 2011." Notice how it has the name of the newspaper (The Guardian) followed by the name of the publisher (Guardian Media Group). The title of the reference is an external link to the online newspaper article. If you want to have a look at the original, it's footnote number 18 on the article.

However, for the video/audio citations the name of the work is always missing for the references that have a linked URL. For example, "(3) Jason Solomons. (19 Aug 2010). Film Weekly hooks up with The Human Centipede and experiences Pianomania. Guardian Media Group. Event occurs at 7:15–7:20. Retrieved 8 Sep 2010." - Note how there is not the name of the work (The Guardian) given before the name of the publisher. Again the title is an external link to the reference, it's number 3 on the article in case you want to have a look.

If you view the reference section wikitext you will notice that these video/audio references do all have a 'work' given. However, the reference on the article does not show this. I cannot for the life of my work out why this is.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me what I'm doing wrong here? Or if anyone knows a quick easy way to fix this please go ahead and change the formatting for it. This article is currently an FAC and so I'd really love to get this sorted out as soon as possible.

Thanks! Coolug (talk) 16:24, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

If you look at Template:Cite video, you'll see that there isn't a "work" parameter. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:36, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
It could be done if we edited {{cite video}}. Currently it calls {{Citation/core}}, passing Title={{{title|}}} and not passing anything as the IncludedWorkTitle. If it passed IncludedWorkTitle={{{title|}}} and Title={{{work|}}}, as {{cite web}} does, then both would be displayed. See the current contents of my sandbox. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:44, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for these very prompt replies. I agree that the way videos are cited should be changed, as very often a video is located on the webpage of a newspaper, and so should probably have a 'work' showing in the same way a newspaper article has one. For the time being I have simply added the work title in italics to the publisher information, with an explanatory note so curious editors will understand why the references are formatted that way. I've done this so that the references are consistent throughout the article. Anyway, thanks for helping out, cya! Coolug (talk) 17:18, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Take this to Template talk:Cite video. I have my head in these templates, so I will be glad to look at it. ---— Gadget850 (Ed)  18:39, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Done at Template_talk:Cite_video#Add a "work" parameter. My coding idea isn't good enough, alas. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:53, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Looking at this, I don't think {{cite video}} is appropriate here, as it is intended for a movie, film or the like. The source is a news article and {{cite news}} will work using |at=:

    {{cite news |author=Jason Solomons |title=Film Weekly hooks up with The Human Centipede and experiences Pianomania |work=] |date=19 August 2010 |url=http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/audio/2010/aug/19/film-weekly-human-centipede-pianomania |at=Time 7:15–7:20}}
Jason Solomons (19 August 2010). "Film Weekly hooks up with The Human Centipede and experiences Pianomania". The Guardian. Time 7:15–7:20.

    New question

I was wondering if you can make an update on the[REDACTED] page of Svengali. There is going to be a live performance of the production by the Winnipeg Ballet in Vancouver in 2012 at the The Centre In Vancouver For Performing Arts — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.69.151.57 (talk) 17:13, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

http://www.rwb.org/tours shows planned performances in many cities. Misplaced Pages is an encyclopedia and does generally not show such information about upcoming tours. If the ballet itself had an article then that article could have been linked at Svengali (disambiguation) and maybe Svengali. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:46, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Societal attitudes towards pedophilia in medieval Europe

Hi ! I was wondering how I could put this article in the encyclopedia ? I wrote in in my userpages. It's at User:S Larctia/Societal attitudes towards pedophilia in medieval Europe. Thanks. Simone. —Preceding undated comment added 18:08, 1 September 2011 (UTC).

You shouldn't. Misplaced Pages is not a place for original research. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:39, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I've read that policy now, and I don't understand how my article is original research. The claims in it are supported by reliable academic sources. Simone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by S Larctia (talkcontribs) 20:59, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm not saying it's not sound research; but it's synthesis and research on an extremely narrow topic, rather than a mere assembly of scattered data into a coherent whole. That species of scholarship is not what we do in an encyclopedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:06, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
What Orange Mike is saying is that, while yes you do have cited sources, what you have done is to use the sources to arrive at your own conclusions. That is, you have created a novel synthesis by using information from various sources to create a conclusion which is not necessarily supported by any one of the sources by themselves. --Jayron32 22:07, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I have revised the article to reduce any such conclusions, and submitted to Articles for Creation. However, there seem to be plenty of "novel syntheses" on Misplaced Pages: for example the article on Gloom seems to be doing a very similar thing. Are you sure that this policy isn't a little too strict on what constitutes good scholarship ? It's difficult to write an article on an obscure topic if we are required to only use sources which point at it directly. Simone — Preceding unsigned comment added by S Larctia (talkcontribs) 23:45, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Misplaced Pages is an encyclopaedia, not a scholarly journal. It has different purposes, and requires a different approach to writing. --ColinFine (talk) 00:14, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
@S Larctia: I'm not going to deny that there is another poorly written article at Misplaced Pages. I don't see why that somehow justifies adding yet another poorly written article to the mix. Why not try to write a good article within policy instead of trying to find some other random article which is substandard? --Jayron32 00:22, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
That "that there is another poorly written article at Misplaced Pages" is what we call the WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS argument, and is considered an invalid argument for retention of an article which does not meet our parameters. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:53, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Poorly written? I think any article that starts out with "Gloom is a depressing darkness" is a keeper. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 00:56, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    Conrad N. Hilton Foundation page

Full disclosure: I work for the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. We're aware and respectful of Misplaced Pages's editing policies. We do not want to self-promote our organization, but we would prefer for the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize to appear on separate, but linked pages.

Currently, if you look for "Hilton Foundation," (http://en.wikipedia.org/Conrad_N._Hilton_Foundation) it redirects to the "Hilton Prize" (http://en.wikipedia.org/Conrad_N._Hilton_Humanitarian_Prize). We would like to keep the Prize page, but we would also like a separate page dedicated to the Foundation. Alternatively, we would like the Prize to be featured on the Foundation page.

Misplaced Pages's editing rules seem quite explicit about PR and self-promotion, so could you please advise on how we could carry out such a change while respecting your guidelines?

Thanks. Cnhf (talk) 18:34, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

I don't think that would be appropriate as each article would be very short. You should also create a new user name as User:Cnhf is in breach of the user name policy. – ukexpat (talk) 18:38, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Agreed on the need for a new user name, however I think it is entirely possible for enough information to be added about the Grants done by the Foundation that a split is possible. What I would suggest is that under a new individual user name, that you add to the talk page for the article the information about the Grants that you think should be added (starting with the information on http://www.hiltonfoundation.org/ and http://www.hiltonfoundation.org/initiatives-a-programs ). An editor without a COI can then add it (if you drop me a note, I'll take a look). I also changed the redirect for the Foundation page to the Foundation section of the Humanitarian Prize article. After enough gets added, depending on length it may be appropriate to split them.Naraht (talk) 19:02, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Would it be more appropriate then for the same article to be posted under Conrad N. Hilton Foundation instead of redirected to the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moorghen (talkcontribs) 18:58, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
You mean move the article? Having the same text under two different articles is to be avoided, that's what redirects are for.Naraht (talk) 19:02, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I have edited Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize so that it flows better with the current content. I have no problem with splitting the article if sufficient content can be added to each, but probably the Prize article should be moved to Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and then be reworked to deal with all the Foundation stuff, including the Prize. – ukexpat (talk) 19:09, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
I agree, ukexpat, the Prize article should be moved to Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and then be reworked to deal with all the Foundation stuff, including the Prize. Consequence on the servers of a change in the noinclude section of a template

Moved to Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical)#Consequence on the servers of a change in the noinclude section of a template – Moved by ArséniureDeGallium. --Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 22:16, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi everybody. I have a very technical question for you.

Suppose I have a template used in one million pages (on French Wiktionary it's not theoritical, there is at least one template which is on every single page in main namespace).

    1. If I add a block <noinclude>foo</noinclude> without modifing anything else, will the cache servers understand that nothing has changed, or will they put one million pages into the job queue?
    2. If I change anything between already existing <noinclude>...</noinclude> tags, same question.

Hoping you'll help me to understand all that, regards. --GaAs (d) 19:17, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Help:Template#Noinclude, includeonly, and onlyinclude says the text between the tags will be excluded from the template transclusion or substitution, so my guess is, if the page is purged there will still be a check on the page data on the server. Also, regarding the markup of the pages, the two versions of the page will be different, although this will not be visible in read mode (however the change can be seen in edit mode and I would think that two different revisions of a page that differ in edit mode will count as really "different" pages from the MediaWiki softwares and the servers point of view). I am not too much into the technical aspects of Misplaced Pages, however, so another user might be able to provide a more technically "correct" answer. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 19:36, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Do you know if there is a place to ask this type of question directltly to the developpers? --GaAs (d) 19:48, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
The right place for this question is Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical) (or perhaps IRC). Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 19:55, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I moved this question to Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical), please remove it from here. --GaAs (d) 21:16, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Problem with lists and tables template needs fixing urgently

Something has happened to the template that controls the arrangement of tables and lists. The system is no longer recognizing words and sorting them in alphabetical order. The List of Ancient Greek temples has been rendered nonsense. It is not a problem with the article and not vandalism to the article itself, because that problem is manifest on earlier versions as well as the present. List of paintings by Leonardo da Vinci reveals the same problem. Could somebody please check this out at the right level, because there must currently be inoperable lists all over Wiki. NOTE: the problem only affects sortable lists. Amandajm (talk) 03:50, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I have reverted recent changes to {{Ntsh}}, which appears to have fixed the problem. Yoenit (talk) 08:29, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank You! Everything seems to be back to normal! Amandajm (talk) 12:11, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

The template was not broken. It is intended to sort NUMBERS. Setting the value of the first parameter to a non numeric value caused the error messages because the template expected a number and not a word. –droll  15:28, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    Help with blockquotes

It isn't a template, <blockquote> is an HTML tag. Do you need to quote that much? You should only quote what is succinctly relevant. You can add a reference to the full text. You can eliminate the use of <br /> by wrapping the text in <poem>...</poem>. ---— Gadget850 (Ed)  05:14, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

    INCOTERMS

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I appreciate your clarifications on the following,

I understand that some shippers/sellers are charged EBS or EBC - Emergency Bunker Surcharges/Charges ??.

I understand that the situation is as follows:

When seller/exporters ship out goods to say China on FOB, Port Klang, Malaysia INCOTERMS 2010 they are still charged EBS/EBC from the shipping company. The reason is that in China and these exporters have to pay a surcharge due to the above reason.

Isn't this violating the regulations under INCOTERMS 2010 because under INCOTERMS 2010 rules, the seller/exporter is not responsible for any other payment after the goods have been put on board the shipping vessel. If so then why should a seller be expected to pay the surcharge of the freight when the element of freight does not even exist when the terms of sale is on FOB basis.

I understand that this rule only applies in ASIA. What is the rationale of this decision and the imposition of the surcharge?

Can this be avoided by shipping out say on EXW - Ex Works basis?

Appreciate your kind clarifications on this matter.

    Regards and thank you.

Please note that you are at Misplaced Pages, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Misplaced Pages itself. How to id edits which are not the most recent ones?

    Hi Wikipedians,

how can I find those my edits which are not the most recent ones to the respective page?

I have the HD page bookmarked, so I can always see what's been happening in the most recent topics, but say, I didn't check HelpDesk regularly, or one of my questions wouldn't be commented on by anyone, so it would "drop off the top" of the HD page.

Is there a way to check within my contributions (or a similar list) whether the respective section has been changed after my edit? That would be a great help, for example my edits to Talk:Signature (disambiguation) and Signature (disambiguation), as they would pop up if there was any opposition or criticism to the merger. The new section on Talk: T-72 would be another example,

    Thanks in advance, - ¡Ouch! ( / more pain) 10:34, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

If I understand correctly, you mean you start a topic for example here at the help desk, then perhaps log off. After that, someone replies to your thread, but after that (and before you log in again) a number of other threads have been started below your thread? Then, when you come back and check your watchlist again, you see the latest change to the page which is to a new thread started after the one you started. Is that what you mean? If so, then yes, this is kind of a problem, as it is not possible to watch only a specific section of a page. There is a talk system currently in development called LiquidThreads which would solve this problem (see Misplaced Pages:LiquidThreads). However, this has not yet been enabled here on the English Misplaced Pages and I don't know if or when it will be. What I do to keep track of discussions taking place at specific sections of a long talk page is I create a direct wikilink to the section / thread on my userpage (see User:Toshio Yamaguchi#Active discussions). This reminds me of the fact that there is a discussion going on at a specific section of a talk page and I can quickly jump to that section by clicking on the link. I don't know if that is a solution for you, though. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 10:57, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
There is another possible solution. Go to My preferences and on the watchlist tab the first item under Advanced options says "Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent". That will modify your watchlist so that there is a drop down next to each of your watchlist items that have multiple edit in a day. If you click the triangle all the edits will show and you can see if any modified a section you are concerned with. GB fan please review my editing 11:26, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

    Editing Biographies

I have been asked to rework the existing biography of a living person. There are no objections on behalf of the subject and the information is basically the same as the current biography but has been reworked to maximize readability. Is it as simple as editing the page cutting the current information and pasting the new material in? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikihelp615 (talkcontribs) 14:53, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Technically, yes. However, please read our information on conflict of interest and biographies. All of the material added must sourced to independent reliable sources. TNXMan 15:02, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
As I've pointed out on your talk page, "There are no objections on behalf of the subject" is totally irrelevant to the matter: we neither seek nor desire the permission of subjects to create, edit and/or delete articles about them, although obviously we want to know about any inaccuracies that have crept in. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:16, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Difficulty making correction to article references directed to a portal

    Greetings:

I've just been looking at the Port Jervis, New York article and found a reference that points to an incorrect url.

When trying to make the correction myself I was unable to do so and seemingly was redirected to the Hudson Valley Portal. Here I was also stymied and found it difficult to find who/how should be contacted to address the issue.

The reference in question in the Port Jervis article is #2 "Port Jervis Lynching indictments". New York Times. June 30, 1892.

    Its url is currently :http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F60710FC3E5C17738DDDAA0894DE405B8285F0D3

The correct url should be: http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=F30E12F63E5C17738DDDA90B94DE405B8285F0D3

There was some prior controversy and mediation of which I was part regarding inclusion of information about the above incident in the article. The mediator concluded that information should be included which was consistent with the view I had proposed. Given this history it might be reasonable to affect some sort of edit protection. However, other references there are not of such a controversial nature and seemingly would not need to be protected

Broadly speaking I found the difficulty in determining how the article reference might be accessed and, in this case corrected, user unfriendly.

    Thank you. 71.188.228.165 (talk) 16:57, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

    Daily Article editing

I am puzzled as to whether the editor of the Daily Article has a bet with himself. Three articles about Australian military veterans have appeared in the last two months and nearly a dozen about warships since the beginning of the year.67.160.58.243 (talk) 17:41, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

You should ask at this talk page, but I doubt what you say is the case. TNXMan 17:50, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
(e/c) Only the very best quality articles appear at the top left of the Main page. If there's a topic area that interests you, you too could dive in to improve those articles to meet the featured article criteria. If there is a bias towards military veterans and warships, then this merely reflects the interests of the most skilled contributors here. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:57, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
It may also reflect the fact that there is a great deal of *exact* information out there, both from primary government sources and from secondary sources. The fact that the USS Telephone participated in the Battle of Stuffed Lion Reef had two hits a-midships from the XSS Sticky Note and had 68 Sailors killed and 27 injured is going to be available from both the US Navy and from several long established Military related websites. The fact that it was launched on March 4th, 1935 from Brooklyn ship yard isn't really going to be up for debate. With the exception of a few ships (USS Liberty for example, though the attack gets its own page), there really isn't *that* much that is debatable or unreferenced in them which helps to contribute to that type of article being relatively easy to make a Featured Article.Naraht (talk) 18:21, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

    Category question

Vito Roberto Palazzolo (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

There is a redlinked category at the bottom of the page called "Articles with Afrikaans language external links". It's not in the source of the page, so it must be generated somehow by the use of {{af icon}} or something. I'd actually like to get rid of it, but (a) I don't know how and (b) maybe it's serving some purpose. I can see it's part of a hidden category with a similar name, but that doesn't explain this category.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:53, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it's coming from that template but what I don't understand is why it is red-linked. The category exists: Category:Articles with Afrikaans language external links, and so should be blue in the article, as it is in the template page, but it's red-linked in every article I've checked that uses the af-icon template and in this sentence. It may be some type of work queue issue. I'm going to try a null edit to the category.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:08, 2 September 2011 (UTC)
Okay, so I was fooled by the fact that categories that have not yet been created, show content as if they exist, and here there were multiple pages linked to the category so it was populated. I just created it.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:13, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

I have reverted your additions back to the original version of the page. I should note that you should not be editing a page about an organization you work for. Because you represent the interests of the organization, that is a conflict of interest (see Misplaced Pages:Conflict of interest with the core mission of Misplaced Pages. Besides the picture problems, the text you added was of an inappropriate tone for an encyclopedia. If you have suggestions to changes you wish to make, use the "discussion" tab at the top of the pages and make a suggestion there, so that the proper changes can be made by people who don't represent the subject of the page. We want the information in our articles to be as accurate and up-to-date as possible, but language which speaks of "the mission" of an organization and uses overly flowerly and glowing language to describe that organization are inappropriate to what is supposed to be a neutral source of information (see Misplaced Pages:Neutral point of view). We want your input in articles, but also be aware that because of your closeness to the subject, it may be difficult for you to write the actual text of the article in ways that may be compliant with Misplaced Pages policies. I strongly urge you, and others at your organization, to read Misplaced Pages:FAQ/Organizations for more info on how to work within the ethos of Misplaced Pages. --Jayron32 00:10, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    News source plagiarising Misplaced Pages

I think I've spotted a news source plagiarising Misplaced Pages (i.e. using WP without acknowledgement). What steps should I take? News source here: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=7502 (look for the cross table near the bottom of the page), Misplaced Pages page here: Chess World Cup 2011. Adpete (talk) 07:04, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

This would be hard to prove. I suspect that chessbase and the Misplaced Pages editors are maintaining the two charts independently using the raw data published by the official site. In any case, my understanding of Misplaced Pages:Mirrors and forks#Non-compliance process is that you can do nothing about it; the only editors who could take action are those who contributed to that part of the Chess World Cup 2011 page. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:02, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
They definitely got it from us, the links in the chart go to non-existant pages of the format chessbasse.com/player name. In my opinion the chart doesn't meet the so called Threshold of originality, which means it can't be copyrighted and there is thus no need to acknowledge the source (though it would be polite). Yoenit (talk)
Actually comparing the HTML source of the two pages it is very clear that they've copied Misplaced Pages's HTML code, without ackowledgement. (And then they even have a "Copyright Chessbase" notice at the bottom of the page, though the page includes more than the plagiarised table). To me, what has been plagiarised is not the tournament scores, but the nice easy-to-read knockout tournament format which has been developed by many Misplaced Pages editors over the years. I'll also add that Chessbase is quite a respected source in the chess world, I have frequently used it for chess articles because I consider it a WP:Reliable Source. They're not a fork or mirror site like in the link suggested by John of Reading above, so I don't think the advice on that page is really relevant. As a frequent Chessbase reader, this seems to me like a one-off mistake by Chessbase. They will probably respond to a polite request to acknowledge Misplaced Pages (or better still, link to the article). But, does Misplaced Pages have any sort of policy on dealing with sort of thing, what I would call plagiarism? Adpete (talk) 10:20, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
By policy, I think you mean does Misplaced Pages have an article in which it describes the steps it takes if someone violates its copyright license. I can't find any, but at Misplaced Pages, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. All I can find is articles that say it's "unauthorized" to copy articles without attribution, e.g., see WP:COMPLIC.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:56, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
I think the page I wanted is this one: Misplaced Pages:Reusing Misplaced Pages content. I have sent Chessbase a (hopefully) gentle email about it, with a link to that page. Adpete (talk) 00:02, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

    putting images in an article

I now have a draft article, but need to include .jpg images. How do I upload images and put them in my article?TankhouseTom (talk) 16:49, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Misplaced Pages's image use policy.
    • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Misplaced Pages or Wikimedia Commons, add ] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.Template:Z40 -- John of Reading (talk) 19:02, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    researching my family history

I am researching my family history. Due to records not available after 1954 I am finding this task difficult. I know that my Uncle William frederick Howard emigrated to Australia in 1929. I know he still lived in perth when his brother R0bert Oliver Howard died in 1979, in Fairfield Queensland. I have now found records from the Cremetorium with his death listed in 1985. I know there must be children but do not know where to get the information from. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Many thanks for your time. Barbara Honey. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.9 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Misplaced Pages, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Misplaced Pages itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:58, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    AIDS roster addition

Hello, Misplaced Pages, Please add Graham Chapman, of Monty Python's Flying Circus, to your roster. He was the first AIDS death that effected me personally. Thank you. Pamela Kimmell — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.95.237.45 (talk) 17:53, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, this page is for questions about how to use or edit Misplaced Pages, rather than for making suggestions about individual articles: the best place for this is usually the talk page for the relevant article. Regarding Graham Chapman, our article states that he died of throat/spinal cancer, and makes no mention of HIV/AIDS. I'll look into this further though, and if I can find any more information, add it to the article. Meanwhile, if you know of a source for the suggestion that he died of AIDS, perhaps you could post it on Talk:Graham Chapman. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:27, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    Creating pages with preloaded content

Hi. I wasn't sure if I should ask this at VPT or here, but since it's technically about how to use Misplaced Pages, I decided to ask it here. If I should move this, point me in the right direction.

I would like to be able to create a page from a redlink with preloaded content. this section on WP:RFA does it with an input box using the |preload=page parameter, but I would like to do it with a redlink. There are redlinks in Template:NRHP Article Archive and Template:NRHP Picture Archive that users click on to archive new pictures/articles every month. Each month's archive has the same basic formatting: archive header at the top, followed by a search box, followed by a link to the opposite archive (i.e. picture archives link to article archives and vice versa), then an h2 heading, followed by the list. I've successfully moved a lot of this into the two templates above, but when a user clicks on the redlinks, I would like for the resultant pages to preload the template call, as well as the month/year heading seen on all the archive pages in the above templates. Specifically, I would like the new pages to be preloaded with the following content:

    Article archives
    {{NRHP Article Archive}}
    =={{subst:SUBPAGENAME}}==

    Picture archives
    {{NRHP Picture Archive}}
    =={{subst:SUBPAGENAME}}==

Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Thanks!--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 17:53, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    Air Lease Corporation ( ALC)

    Very important information ommitted:

Air Lease Corporation went public in April 2011, raised $ 922 Million in equity, and is listed on the NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE under the symbol "AL"

ALC has more than 234 new aircraft on order from Boeing (BA) Airbus (EADS ) Embraer and ATR

ALC is one of the largest commercial customers of Boeing and Airbus, the two largest civil aircraft manufacturers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.4.248.39 (talk) 19:16, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages is the encyclopedia anybody can edit. If you can find a reliable source feel free to add this not so very important information to the Air Lease article. Astronaut (talk) 19:56, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
    • DONE. Thanks for the ALC news. I have updated article "Air Lease" (ALC) with most of that data, confirmed in 3 sources. Feel free to edit more. The expanded orders were also big news in U.S. cities related to the new aircraft. Thanks again. -Wikid77 21:01, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I assume you mean one of the images appearing in the Lamium album article. If you click on the image you are interested in, you will be taken to a page of information about that image including its licence and copyright conditions. If the image copyright information says you can copy it, then you can download the image to your computer. Once downloaded, you can then upload the image to your own website. Note that many images only permit copying if you attribute the image to its original author (I suggest a suitably worded caption on your website might serve well). Where to get 50 helpers for WP:GOCE backlog

I already posted a request in WP:Editor assistance/Requests, but I am unsure where else to ask for 50 editors to join a backlog-editing drive, this time for copy-editing (grammar, punctuation, wikilinks) during the month of September:

That project page (above), from Wikiproject WP:GOCE, explains the process for editing articles (from 2010-2011) to correct the grammar, tone, and "References" section (etc.). For example, there are over 100 articles which need to be updated from April 2010:

Currently, there are 30 editors who quickly signed up to help with the editing, but it would be good to have about 80 editors (50 more people). Each article takes about 1 hour, and with 80 people, then each could edit less than 10 articles, if possible, during September. I wonder where else I could post a message to ask for helpers. -Wikid77 (talk) 20:09, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I'll sign up! I've been looking for things to do lately. You can check my contribs, especially to Virginia and Truckee Railroad to evaluate my MOS adherence. I'm usually pretty good with the Chicago Manual of Style, which the WP MOS seems to be based upon... just the darn em-dash/en-dash things still gets me. :)  ☢ Prompt Critical ☢  00:20, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Would my Signature be considered obnoxious?

Just wondering. I've been playing around with it, and don't want to run afoul of any standards we may have. That said, I've seen far worse, but of course that's not an excuse. All opinions welcome!  ☢ Prompt Critical ☢  20:44, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

One problem might be that your signature takes up a lot of space in the edit window. Misplaced Pages:Signatures#Length says "Signatures that take up more than two or three lines in the edit window clutter the page and make it harder to distinguish posts from signatures." For me, it nearly fills three lines in the edit window, so if possible you should consider shortening your signature. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 21:02, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Your signature did brighten up my evening. One disadvantage is that it is more prominent than the preceding text, and almost everything else on the page, so it might detract from the message you're trying to convey. Certes (talk) 21:08, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
    • Perhaps use gold and reduce 1 font-tag: As you might known, the style="xx;yy;zz" can combine multiple entries, separated by semicolons (";"). Also, the color "yellow" seems too bright, so try "gold" instead. The reduced signature might be:
    <font face= "courier" style= "border:1px solid black; background:gold">''' &#x2622; ] ]'''</font>
To look like:    ☢ Prompt Critical ☢
What do you think of those changes, as shorter, with gold? -Wikid77 21:16, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Ah, thanks Wikid77! I had considered Gold for just that reason. The Black-on-yellow is/was supposed to invoke a nuclear warning message, but since those are intended per se to scream at the viewer, I agree that might be too much. How does this look now, length-wise? *edit: that time it was broken across 2 lines at the word break, so I tacked on a NBSP...  ☢ Prompt Critical ☢  23:26, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    messed up redirect

Today I created the article Carlo Musso. While checking "what links here" after I'd moved it into article space, I noticed that there had been a bunch of redlinks to the article, but that they referred to an Italian film director with the same name. I tried to fix this situation by moving the new article to Carlo Musso (physician), but that created a redirect which will continue to mess up those redlinks. I'm sorry if there was something I should have read before I did this, it didn't occur to me to look until I'd seen what had happened. Anyway, now I have no idea what to do, and am hoping someone here can help. — alf.laylah.wa.laylah (talk) 21:23, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

One option is to change Carlo Musso from a redirect to a disambiguation page, with a working link to your text at Carlo Musso (physician) and a redlink to Carlo Musso (director). (Click on Redirected from Carlo Musso to get the redirect page.) Then revise the existing links to Carlo Musso (the ones which were red but are now blue) to point directly to one of those two pages, probably the director. I have changed the links about the director to point to terh redlink Carlo Musso (director), and then moved the new article back to Carlo Musso since it is currently the only article about a person by that name. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:52, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, that sounds better. Carlo Musso (physician) now redirects to Carlo Musso, so the link from Participation of medical professionals in American executions still works. Certes (talk) 23:03, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
    thank you so much! — alf.laylah.wa.laylah (talk) 00:12, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

    Crop white space, desharpen

Hello. Can someone crop the whitespace and desharpen File:1893 Stanford Amercian football team.jpg? Thanks. Albacore (talk) 21:37, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

This sounds like a job for Misplaced Pages:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop. They have a request form where you can ask an image editor to help out. Certes (talk) 22:56, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

    Banning an IP?

    Hello,

This page often gets some hidden advertisement in it: http://en.wikipedia.org/Asian_handicap

"Soccerbettingmasters, established in 2006, is the current documented Champion of this style Sports Betting."

He/she does not provide any footnote. Furthermore, I have worked in both internet marketing and am nowadays a professional bettor. From my experience I can tell that their page looks like a typical scam page.

Is there something we can do about it like giving an IP ban? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Desideriuss (talkcontribs) 00:21, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

It looks like that article is nearly only edited by IPs. If multiple IPs are posting the link, an IP ban would do little to deter them. You could either ask for page protection at WP:RFPP or get the site blacklisted from Misplaced Pages. You can see more about that at WP:BLACKLIST. Dismas| 00:25, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Wrong information on how old Octavius Winslow was when he died.

On Octavius Winslow's wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/Octavius_Winslow to the right underneath his picture, it says he was born in August of 1808, and died in March of 1878, and that he was 43 years old. That's obviously not right, since basic math says that he would have been 69 at the time of his death. I tried fixing it, but I can't seem to find where it lists his age in the edit page. Any help would be much appreciated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.128.185.7 (talk) 04:28, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

It was in the infobox, in the "death date and age" template. I fixed it. --Jayron32 04:32, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

    Login trouble

Hello, this is Misplaced Pages user known as 'City of Lukington'. I can be seen on editing history of articles such as 'Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea', and my talk-page can be viewed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/User_talk:City_of_Lukington I am interested in cartography evidently.

However, today, without having ever logged out , I have lost the ability to log in again. I have tried logging in under the names 'City of Lukington' and 'Lukington' , using all password I can possibly think of which I have for this and other sites I use. I was not able to find help on the 'contact us' page and so turn to writing a formal e-mail to what I hope will be a human being.

    Yours sincerely,

Did you have an email associated with your account? If so: try the mail a new password option at the login screen. Jarkeld (talk) 10:34, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
I see User:City of Lukington has edited since this post so I guess the problem is solved. If you store an email address at Special:Preferences then you can request a new password by email another time. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:20, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Why post stuff I have to pay for - shame!

Quicky question - why do you keep posting old and interesting articles that I go into and have to pay for from various greedy newspaper companies? Isn't there enough info on the web for free to get info without paying? (I know there is - I write for a movie site for free, don't get paid and charge nobody anything - all for the love of the fan!) PLEASE stop posting stuff that's not free and clear of money hungry desperados - it's super annoying!

Ideally newspaper articles would be free to access, but journalists need to feed their family too. There's not much of an alternative to using them as sources if they're the only ones going. Compare academic literature: most scientific papers cost €25/$30 to access. If we were to avoid the use of these, a huge proportion of our science articles would have no reliable sources whatsoever. It's a real pain, but there's nothing that we can do about it. Brammers (talk/c) 12:14, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

    DYK nomination

I am trying to submit a new DYK nomination of Mutiny at Sucro for September 4 and not sure if I have done it right for the new procedure. Can you look at September 4 and see if I have done it right or if I need to correct something? thanks.--Doug Coldwell 14:27, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

You must put it on T:TDYK. Did you know this guide? It's very simple.--♫Greatorangepumpkin♫HeyI am dynamite 14:43, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

How do I find all the Misplaced Pages pages that are linked to a Misplaced Pages page?

    Resolved

User found it on their own, GB fan please review my editing 14:36, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

I would like a list of all Misplaced Pages pages linked to a specific Misplaced Pages page.

How or where can I find this?

For example a page about trees will probably be linked to by pages about leaves and branches, to name two pages. I would like to be able to quickly find ALL the pages that are linked to any Misplaced Pages page.

The tree page is not really my interest, it is merely a random example.

    Editing help?

I'm trying to make a modest change to Sue Bird. However, each time, it has royally messed up the article, affecting sections I don't think I'm touching. I've tried twice . When I open the page for editing, the material in the edit window, before making any changes, looks askew. I think it has something to do with the tables. I originally crated the first table, although someone else edited it subsequently. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?--SPhilbrickT 15:00, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

In you deleted a lot of newlines in a table. This broke the table formatting. Maybe there is something incompatible in your browser or account which can cause newlines to disappear on save. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:26, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
