(Kapu = Protector)

It is a caste found in the Indian State of Andhra Pradesh. They are also called Balijas, Telagas, Turpu Kapu, Munnuri Kapu, Ontari or Naidus. They make up about 25% of the population of Andhra Pradesh and are involved in various professions.

Historically they are believed to have formed some of the more prominent Kingdoms of South India. The Vijayanagara empire was formed by the Kuruba caste of Karnataka which may be a branch of the Kapus or vice versa.

They settled in as land lords, farmers and in many other professions. Kapu's were one of the earliest inhabitants of South India. They are believed to have migrated from Kampilya (near Ayodhya), also called Kapu.
