David Jonathan Edwards (born 26 April 1976) is a Welsh Plaid Cymru politician. He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Carmarthen East and Dinefwr since May 2010. Edwards held the seat for Plaid Cymru, replacing previous MP Adam Price who stood down.
In January 2012, he submitted a Early Day Motion for a Cornish Assembly, being supported by fellow PC MPs Hywel Williams and Elfyn Llywd and Paul Flynn of Labour.
Early Days
Jonathan Edwards was born and raised in the mining village of Capel Hendre near Ammanford. He attended Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman and Ysgol Gyfun Maes yr Yrfa before graduating in History and Politics at the University of Wales Aberystwyth and gaining a postgraduate degree in International History specializing in the end of the Cold War.
Politics
After completing his academic studies, Jonathan worked as chief of staff for Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM and Adam Price MP for seven years, where he led on political matters for both elected members. He has a wide understanding of Parliamentary and National Assembly politics.
He was elected to the Carmarthen Town Council for the 2004-2008 term, and was elected to the historical post of town Sheriff in 2005. Also in 2005, Jonathan was given responsibility for strategic matters within Plaid Cymru's new National Campaigns Directorate.
After the 2007 National Assembly, Jonathan moved to work for Citizens Advice Cymru where he led on Public Affairs, Public Relations, and policy matters.
Jonathan was elected to Carmarthen East and Dinefwr seat in Parliament in May 2010. Jonathan is the Plaid Cymru spokesman for: Business, Innovation and Skills; Communities and Local Government; Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport; Transport; and Treasury. He is on the Select Committee for Welsh Affairs.
